reysus 1,064
Amazon is just a s*** company so I would never use this. Also as someone who worked in service for a while, it would be a shame if there was little to no human interaction in a grocery store. Not that I was the best at my job or anything, lol, but I always loved smiling at customers, giving them compliments, and just having even a quick conversation with them to brighten up their day. This is almost definitely going to be the future, but Imo it just seems a bit depressing.

But there's always the nice ones that brighten up my day.

They wouldn't be competitors. Most of the stuff sold on Amazon is already from another company, just fulfilled by Amazon. If they partnered with already established stores, its a win win. Amazon wouldn't have spend money building stores. The companies would have to pay Amazon for the service, but would being saving a lot from not having to hire people to run and service the stores. Plus they gain more customers because of the convenience of the shopping service. "My people… need to let our bitchiness out. I go to school at UIUC for computer science and a lot of students get internships and jobs at big tech companies, Amazon being one of them. I've just heard a lot of bad stories about how they abuse employees and nobody likes working there. I mean I still occasionally buy stuff on Amazon just because it's easy to get everything in one order, but I generally dislike giving them business. This is great. I don't really like human interaction when I'm shopping. I'm more of a leave me alone and don't notice me while I'm shopping kind of person. I love self checkout and I love this idea. They can add a search function on the app to help you locate what you're looking for, what size is available, what color, etc. This really could be great. It seems like a good idea but what happens when if it stops working? Then the whole store would shut down. Same as if in a regular store all checkout possiblities would stop working. It's a high quality software... just as in self driving car for example. They will make sure it will work.

I'm not completely against this type of technology BUT I avoid shopping online and I always try to find items at stores in my city. I know there are people who struggle and their only way to work is through service jobs. I'm the opposite of you, I'd prefer to interact with someone at the store rather than a robot. I'm really terrified of AI and the future that brings Especially when other countries or people can use drones to swoop in on a population and terminate them. Bette Davis 12,742
It feels so impersonal and cold imo. Americans are so obsessed with convenience and saving time and money that it's ruining the quality and experience of everything I love when I'm abroad everything feels more authentic, personal and of better quality. Cold as ice cream, but still as sweet.
Nemo 4,410
IBM did this as a conceptual ad back in 1999 (kinda like AT&T's "You Will" ads): I guess it's real now.
venusfly 17,885
I really really dislike the concept of this. So far future automation & AI threatens nearly every sector of employment (even the creation of other AI!) Doctors, office workers, builders, taxi drivers, cashiers, computer scientists, pretty much everything! We really need to stop trying to replace/decrease human labour in place of technology, even though it pleases my geek side to see all this cool stuff Humans are naturally selfish, and businesses will continue to adopt these money-saving methods despite the harm it'll inevitably cause.
