Equating the Beatles -- musical INNOVATORS -- to the manufactured pop mess that is One Direction is an absolute crime. I think you're all forgetting just how far ahead of their time the Beatles were and how much they pioneered the modern music recording process (sampling, loops, backwards recordings, multi-track recording). The best example of this is probably "Tomorrow Never Knows." It was recorded in 1966 -- 50 years ago (!!) and it still sounds fresh. Compare this to what mainstream music sounded like that same year (this was like #3 on the 1966 year end chart) Madonna is an institution Without her the music world as you know it would not exist. Sure, she can't sing, but she's made up for it in plenty of other ways I could write paragraphs on why she's a legend but I can just direct you to this lengthy Wikipedia article dedicated solely to Madonna's cultural impact: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cultural_impact_of_Madonna When will your ratty ass faves??? (jk love you, but I just get worked up when people call Madonna overrated) drag them for filth!!!!! this is exactly what I was trying to say

PopBitch 1,218
Bowie overrated? Go sit in a corner. The guy is a ****in' legend. A nation, the world was in mourning over his death for months, for a year still. Memorials all over the world at certain places by fans of all ages He was an "original," not some commercial musical artist. He walked his own walk and survived down periods. He was an avant garde rock star who had people of all ages mourning like nothing I've seen as far as such a wide range of age groups. I know this is a pop board who worships the likes of Ariana Grande, but just because you don't get his music this many years later has no bearing on whether he is a legend or not. You don't call yourself a legend. You become a legend because of the masses over decades that have been affected by your body of work and your effect on the music world and artists. Bowie is cited decade after decade after decade by musical artists, including Gaga, as having been greatly influenced. You can say his music isn't your thing or you don't get it, but you don't get to say a truly creative legend, musical genius, like Bowie is overrated. And, yes, he could sing, but that is so little of what made him a legend. The guy was fearless in his music, not worried about commercial love by the masses, and out of that came love by the masses because he was genuine. His music was eclectic. Bowie at 57, his last tour, singing Heroes. What a LEGEND. And his Sweet Thing/Candidate/Sweet Thing song is one of my favorites, as is the album it's from. n0ne 13,105
Some of ya'll are being too defensive There's a difference between saying a legend is overrated and saying a Legend shouldn't be considered a Legend. I feel like the former is primarily discussed in this thread, so I don't see why you are so hurt. "My people… need to let our bitchiness out. Otherwise, it turns to bile and poisons us"
Matangi 3,050
OKAY IM FINNA SAY IT SO YALL SHOOK ASS BITCHES BETTER BE READY... If there was a female pop star who has been the leading vocalist in the best selling female group of all time, has arguably the best dance skills and one of the absolute best voices, been critically acclaimed throughout her entire career, been nominated for the most grammys of any female artist, and have been fully relevant (i dont mean making music, but central to the conversation of pop music) for nearly two decades and was a PRETTY WHITE WOMAN-- all of you hunties would be wetting yourself, and not just the ones who recognize beyonces significance both within and outside of the colored community

NOT OVERATED AT ALL. Im only like 75% bitter but you're entitled to have your opinions. I just love Bowie so much. The death of Bowie was the death of a voice for every generation of young people. His music was so special and so evolving and yet it also transformed all the people who could understand it. Knowing what Bowie found to be genuine heartbreak of youth and the failures of life and society, was like hearing a secret whisper, and so many followed and so many cheered him on over the years, that his legend could never die. When we lost him this year, and Prince like him, we lost lost little pieces of what it means to be human in an inhumane world, and I hope that some of the people here will come to respect that one day. No one in this thread thinks Beyonce is untalented, nor does anyone think she is less deserving of her status as a legend or an icon due to the color of her skin. Thats not what this thread is about. Beyonce has been known throughout the years to.. uhm.. recycle? material and act as if it is her own. You can look at her songwriting credits and her previous discrepancies and see that she does not have the biggest part in regards to the product she puts out, and to be honest I am not sure how much of the "Beyonce" we know really does come from Beyonce. She is an incredibly talented dancer and vocalist, but the artistry that she sees for herself and that many people see of her is an enormous perception/illusion that has been manufactured over about 20 years or so. She 100% deserves to be called an icon as well as a legend, she does NOT however, in my opinion, deserve to be called an artistic genius (as she often is). ARTPOP is my favorite album don't come for my name

This thread is uniquely about the word "legend" of which she is the only relevant pop artist who is still producing notable work and is a living legend.
