Saint Laurent 4,862
Her influence isn't really drawn from the music she listens to in the way that you're talking. It is UNDENIABLE that her avant garde persona was inspired by, or at least influenced by, Madonna's work.
JusKeepBreathin 19,311
Why is it always the biggest Gaga haters who can quote every word Gaga has said in the past 6 years? Thank goodness for Google. Unfortunately we cannot do the same for Madonna unless you go to a library and try to look up everything on Microfiche and we can see how many times she has changed her opinion and is therefore a LIAR. Give me a break. People get a clearer picture of who actually influenced them them as they get older. Also the more of the world you see the more educated you get, the more influences you start to get too. So those people that influenced you when you were younger are not even a big part of your life as you get older and you realize that they might not even matter to you much anymore. I'll give you an example. My pastor influenced me alot as a child. I even became my church's youth group President. Right now I don't go to church and I don't think of my pastor often. hausoffame 388
I'm sure she admires Madonna, but she has said in the past that she has been inspired by Britney. This makes more sense considering The Fame lp. Her generation had Britney more so than Madonna.
Snow 1,582
Why is this even a question though? I mean it so obvious that Madonna was a big influnce, a huge. But I fail to see why many consider it a bad thing. I think it's great.
PeterPan 0
Does it really matter who is or isnt her biggest influence?
Glamourpuss 29,062
I've never seen Madonna as a big influence on Gaga. I've always been aware of Madonna's work so I'm not completely oblivious but I think they are both so different. In fact I've always seen Gaga as the Madonna that Madonna herself wanted to be. That's like saying Madonna would not be Madonna if not for Cher. As if Madonna was the only female artist not playing by the cookie cutter pop rules. Donna Summer was giving you "Hot Stuff" and ABBA was asking the world to "Give Me A Man After Midnight" while Madonna was still blowing her BF under the bleachers in highschool. Please educate yourself. Female sexuality and empowerment was here long before Madonna. she's a Madge stan and can't take facts
OliviaRodrigoStan 4,384
Conceptually wise, yes Madonna is a clear influence in her. Musically wise, no. Gwen Stefani is her actual main influence, musically wise, together with Michael Jackson. HEART OF EVER-FROST
Kahzandra 130
Spoiler Early Gaga at first reminded me of a conglomerate of so many female artists, mostly Madonna, Xtina, Gwen Stefani and Roisin Murphy (below)...but as I kept revisiting retro 80s and 90s memorobilia of some female performers, I saw so much of their imagery and sound echoed in her, especially her persona from 2008-2011. Also, Dale Bozzio and Nina Hagen (Dale Bozzio was also a huge Influence on Gwen Stefani) Spoiler Spoiler Spoiler Spoiler Famega lowkey gave me Allison Goldfrapp electro hipster vibes. Spoiler Spoiler Wendy O Williams of The Plasmatics Last but not least - I got total 90s Eurodance teas from pre 2014 Gaga Spoiler Spoiler

GagaUnderYou 4,944
Madonna paved the way for Gaga. She broke a lot of norms that were set for women so when Gaga did it, it was more of an art. Madonna isn't very nice to Gaga as we know so that's why Gaga hates the Madonna comparisons now. Most artists Gaga was inspired by were also inspired by Gaga. In my opinion, Gaga does it better but she will always be compared to Madonna, or to be the Madonna of our generation.

It should be a thread so people can add to it and it should be pinned somewhere so everyone can read. I would love to hear more of your opinion as to why each of these pop/rock stars influenced Gaga's looks. Did they also influence her music? This is a great post. PopBitch 1,218
Madonna's influence on Gaga was very strong for the beginning years as far as the road map to being a pop star. It was like she was reading Madonna's playbook and lifting parts. She was a dancing pop star doing music videos that stood out, with Bowie's theatricality visually. Visually Bowie was a big influence, as she has said. She didn't mention musically. There were definite comparisons to Madonna in certain looks or show outfits. All the names you listed as being bigger influences, sure didn't come out in her music those early years. So you list people she admires and listens to, not that showed up as an influence in her music. Sadly, she doesn't seem to be influenced by Bowie as a songwriter. I so wanted a Lady Grinning Soul type song on the piano, Beck, how is her music ever been influenced by him all these years? No where. Gaga can do great covers of all the artists she admires, but I don't see an influence in her songwriting. I see '80s influence in BTW. The rest is electronica mostly or Gaga writing the way she did pre Lady Gaga. For six months Gaga listened to The Beatles Abbey Road obsessively while making Fame. I don't see the influence, the brilliance from Abbey Road. But it pumped her up and she made a great electronica dance album, with her Gaga sound.. Joanne is the huge departure, though. So all I'm saying is Gaga is Gaga I wrote this on Ambien. I hope I made sense. The words were jumping out at me two-dimensional. LOL
