Gaga is doing completely different to Madonna now, yet her fans still keep bashing Gaga for being reductive, I smell jealousy:poot:

I'm not saying both should be compared, they're so different as women AND as pop stars, but Gaga always admitted being a fan of Madonna amongst other, like Queen Bowie or MJ, and that all these idols of her inspired her.

Gaga shouldn't be compared to anyone, she made her own brand and created something new in pop.

Gaga is more influenced by nature than any single artist for Joanne, but if I had to name names I'd say Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Dolly Parton, Bette Midler and Stevie Nicks are the biggest influences at the moment for Gaga.

Madonna is a major influence on Gaga. She just stopped openly admitting it after the whole fiasco between them

I both agree and disagree with you on this. Gaga has drawn influence from many artists, and the more familiar you are with those influences, the more you can see that. I do think that Madonna has been a big influence on her, but mostly in her early days. It's easy to draw the comparisons, a young Italian woman from New York with ambitions to make it big in the music industry, comes out with a handful of catchy tunes and has the pop culture world watching as she pushes the envelope with performance and style, adding new dimensions to what is acceptable for a woman to do.

There's also the Catholic imagery in the music of both women. We know that Gaga started this in the "Alejandro" music video which already got a bit of a "La Isla Bonita" comparison because of the beat. Gaga continued with the Catholic imagery and themes in Born This Way, decades after Madonna first worked with the idea of having it be a part of her image.

Just these alone make it easy to see that Madonna has had a large influence in Gaga's artistic development, though we started to see the departure of Madonna reminders in ARTPOP, Cheek to Cheek (obviously), and especially in Joanne, showing off a versatility that arguably is not in Madonna territory.

I'd argue to say that bigger influences on Gaga are David Bowie, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, John Lennon, Cyndi Lauper, and Cher.

On another note... The Beatles are not a major influence on Oasis! :awkney:

Can't agree with you more. Infect I think that for David Bowie's Grammy performance Gaga was inspired by the Young Americans Medley David and Cher had done!!

She would be a liar if she said Madonna isn't a big influence on her. Stopping praising her doesn't make her a liar.. denial would, but that's not the case. The fact is that Madonna has been a major influence on her and it only saddened Gaga when Madonna ridiculed her... It would break me if Gaga said something remotely bad about me, given how much she influenced me. I guess she feels the same way. Madonna could have gone through hundreds of different ways to let Gaga know that she thinks she's copying her, but he went with a way that hurt Gaga and that lost me my respect for Madonna. It's only reasonable I defend Gaga when those topics arise, in a civilized manner that is.

Oh pls. She implied twice explicitly that Madonna was never a big influence on her past 2012, and just a few weeks ago she claimed that what she and Madonna are doing is a completely different thing because of some bogus reasons that didn't even make sense.

It's annoying how so many LMs feel the need to "defend" Gaga at all when the Madonna issue comes to light. Let's face it, literally every single pop star to gain serious fame since the late 90s has credited Madonna as a huge inspiration and influence. The influence can clearly be seen in all of their career choices, incl. Gaga's. The end, move on, not at all a way of saying that Gaga's work is just a rip-off (and in fact that's exactly what Madonna said in the notorious "reductive" interview: it's just that song, she doesn't copy me as an artist - something that flew over nearly everyone's heads due to mean-spirited editing). But Gaga (and her fans) now is so ****ing proud and childish that she has to actually turn it into a bigger issue about authenticity when that's not even necessary. She inspired and affected everyone, and that's only normal. As Gaga herself said: the last pop revolution was Madonna's.

It's clear from her own statements until the end of 2011 that Gaga listed Madonna, consistently, as part of her biggest influences, so that automatically disqualifies everything Enigma said in his OP unless you want to call her a liar - as if you'd lie about being inspired about Madonna, she damn well knew she'd get **** for it by saying it.

And all this "well, she's not inspired by her anymore now!" bs is ridiculous. Oh, so it's just her peak years, right? Who cares then! It's just the years that actually made her famous and allowed her to make the music she makes now without being ignored because who cares about another country ballad. The very idea of switching between genres, looks, and personalities is something Madonna pioneered in pop music (admittedly inspired by David Bowie, but that doesn't say anything since Gaga listed both of them as inspirations and credited Madonna for the idea of reinventing herself and not Bowie) so no, she can not escape Madonna's influence even now, and that's absolutely fine.

It shocks me how little so many fans care about Gaga's own statements in favor of their own delusions and theories. I posted a massive list of Gaga's statements about Madonna which contained nothing but praise, acknowledgments of artistic debt, and consistent inclusions in her lists of biggest inspirations for her, and people are still pretending that Madonna isn't a big deal, but yeah, Pink Floyd is or whatever - apparently she's more inspired by the people she never mentions, that sounds logical.

You don't have to like Madonna to acknowledge that Gaga has acknowledged since 2008 (to 2012 because she was too petty to realize that Madonna had clearly stated, and repeated in 2013, that it was just about the song - did Gaga forget her own embarrassing copy allegations thrown at Nicki and Katy? What's the difference? Bunch of hypocrites LMs are) that Madonna was a huge influence on her. What's so ****ing difficult about that? It's Gaga's own words! It's not even an opinion, she literally admitted it many times, what the hell is wrong with you people. This is like climate change denial.

Lol, as someone who has followed Madonna since the beginning.. there is no doubt that Madonna has been a major influence for Gaga..but personally I do not see that as something bad.. what is wrong with being influenced by the biggest female star ever?

That's just a long excuse we won't bother analysing. Also I stopped reading when you said: "allowed her to make the music she makes now without being ignored because who cares about another country ballad"

It's very simple though.

Gaga herself said Madonna is among her biggest influences. Literally. Multiple times, and spontaneously since 2008 up to the end of 2011. Was that so hard? I even bolded the important parts.

To me her own statements suffice. I'm just surprised it doesn't suffice for so many other people who are apparently more content framing Gaga as a liar who wasn't ever being honest when talking about her inspirations. But I'm the hater, right? I see nothing has changed here.
