Rolling Stone Trashes 24K Magic

Rolling Stone isn't exactly a fan of Bruno Mars' new album.

"But while his funk game is strong and swagger is stronger, Bruno's acclaimed hook-writing (which has garnered four Number Ones for himself and tons of co-writes on other chart-toppers) has seemingly taken a backseat. Lyrically, it seems like he's trying to recall the Nineties subliminally via breadcrumbs scattered throughout the record, saying "freaking me" (Silk) or "nice and slow" (Usher) or "ain't nobody" (LL Cool J via Chaka Khan) or "damn" (Mr. Show sketch Two Plus One Minus One). If it’s intentional, it scans as cloying; if it's accidental, it scans as lazy."

"Lead single "24k Magic" is already drooping its way back down the charts and it's not impossible to understand why when compared to the sugar-coated bombast of "Uptown Funk" or "Locked out of Heaven."

"So, 24k Magic may not be the most glittering display for Bruno Mars the pop star"

Even though i somewhat agree, why are critics' opinions so relevant. I love ARTPOP and could give two ****s for what they have to say. If you like Bruno's music, dont let these people influence you.

I find 24K Magic sounds annoying with his rap-singing I dunno why, maybe the type of his voice is not that kind of deep swagger dunno how to describe it. At least Uptown Funk has a melody not just lines of rap singing.

I agree.

It's a very manneristic album, not a wise reinvention of that 80/90s sound he was pursuing. Just as ARTPOP, it's nice to see an artist pursuing his personal taste and beliefs, but this doesn't mean that the result has to be well received. moreover, despite it's just nine tracks it's really really heavy and not that impressive. on a sidenote, I'm reading a bunch of disappointed comments about his new attitude
