hELXIG 42,954
It just came at me out of nowhere. I know that Gaga thinks about her own mortality a lot, it's something I do too, and I was thinking about the fact that she's been asking us to call her Joanne, and how this album is supposed to be the messages she wants people to remember her by. And out of nowhere I thought... what if Gaga passed away suddenly? The song Joanne would, for us, become a song about her. And I was suddenly overwhelmed with emotion oh my god. I want Gaga to live a long, long, life, but not everyone does. Just imagine, if she's passed away, listening to her singing these words to us in her own voice... Take my hand, stay Joanne (Gaga), heaven's not ready for you. Every part of my aching heart, needs you more than the angels do. Girl, where do you think you're going? Where do you think you're going, girl? If you could, I know that you'd stay, we both know that things don't work that way. I promised I wouldn't say goodbye, so I grin, and my voice gets thin. And honestly, I know where you're going. Baby, you're just moving on. and I'll still love you even if I can't see you anymore. I can't wait to see you soar Spoiler I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

No no no, I mean that one of her nicknames is Joanne. If she passed away, listening to the song would be as if it's about her and not her aunt. We would hear it as a song about Gaga (who is nicknamed Joanne) like when they play a sad song at a funeral, you imagine it's about the loved one who has passed away, because that's what it means to you at the time. Idk about any of you but I'd cry my heart out to the song thinking of Gaga if she passed away... I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin. I don't know if she particularly wrote it for herself, but I imagine she's thought about this too. That if we call her Joanne, the song could be about herself too. It reminds me of Princess Die a little bit in that way. I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

Personally, I'm not so afraid of my own death, I'm more afraid of losing the ones I love! Gaga being one of them. I need to hug her at least once one day. I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.
Leaf 2,429
The way I see it is she is singing to her aunt, she is singing to herself, and she is singing from the perspective of her father.

Yes! I think these things too! I'm glad others understand what I see in the song. It's very simple in it's arrangement, but such a touching song too. Babel 41,429
I do think the first verse of Joanne is a conversation with herself in a dark period on her life when she had thoughts about committing suicide. "Heaven is not ready for you,Where do you think you're going?" its like a "What are you doing? Wake up! Don't do it" I made the connection when I was thinking about how she wanted to be called Joanne during this era and her explanation of how she wrote the album about a girl that turned out to be herself... and then it all made sense to me! It may be a reach (or not) but the song just went deeper when I looked at it that way, and it'll be even more powerful if what you're saying happens
