StrawberryBlond 14,819
I haven't listened to Joanne yet, so I can't comment on the accuracy of this statement, but when I saw those reviews, my initial thought was totally: "This album would be praised to high heaven if it was by Beyonce." I really thought this would be the album where the critics loved her again and praised her risk taking. It's frustrating beyond words how other artists are praised for being different and going outside their comfort zone, yet when Gaga does it, she gets mixed reception, despite doing exactly what people wanted of her. The girl just can't win and that's partly why I have such a connection to her - we're kindred spirits in that sense. 12 minutes ago, DemeLarell said: Ummm no. Let's be honest here, the general public can identify with Beyonce's songs. It's harder to identify with Lady Gaga because everything is wrapped in metaphors and is very cryptic (which is something I actually enjoy). And even though there is no stand out song on Lemonade the full album and the visuals is a stand out alone. Which is where the acclaim comes from. It's one full piece of artwork rather than a collage. And even though I personally love Joanne and ARTPOP the lyrics aren't as crafted as her earlier music. The hooks don't stick to the GP like it does to us. And I think if Beyonce and Lady Gaga switched albums the results would be worst for both because it is not who they are. I don't know why Beyonce's songs are any easier to relate to than Gaga's. If you haven't gone through the experiences she sings about, you can't relate. And not everything Gaga does is wrapped in metaphors. People just need to grow better brains to understand it, is all. Critics aren't doing their job right if they think a schizophrenic album is worse than a cohesive album just for the fact that's it's all a bit random. As long as it's good music, who cares if it's a mish mash of ideas? And I completely disagree with the statement that if they switched albums, the results would be worse for both. The critics kiss the ground Beyonce walks on, as does the public. They are blinded by her "goddess" nature. *grabs a sick bag* Plus, as controversial as it is (and I know this gets to you), the fact she's a black artist totally helps. They're just respected so much more by critics. The only white girls outside the country genre that get consistently good reviews are Adele and Taylor (and she was once country, so go figure). Both of which are bland/average at best anyway. They follow the rule book, so the critics like them. Other than that, white girls just don't get amazing album reviews, particularly if they like to be a bit different and have a mind of their own. Critics hate that. Yeah, you'll occasionally get surprising critical reception from a Carly Rae Jepsen or a Melanie Martinez (who I regard as white) but other than that, you just don't see the artistry from white girls respected as much. Research their albums and you'll see. I believe in fairly judging an artist's body of work with absolutely no bias, but clearly, a lot of critics don't think that way. That's why I have no desire to become a professional critic. They're just a bunch of sheep who follow each others opinions instead of having any of their own and have biases and agendas to push. And they're supposed to be music experts? I'm not going to pursue a degree in music just to become someone like that. 4 minutes ago, Togekiss said: I listen to lots and lots of artists but Beyoncé just isn't one of them It does bug me how much people try to gauge gaga's authenticity when everything Beyoncé does is just taken at face value, without question. Yes, yes and yes again. Gaga's authenticity has been questioned from day one. No one's ever questioned Beyonce's authenticity. Unless you're me. I've called her out for all her sneaky behaviour for years. But its never massively affected her career. If Gaga stole people's songs and took undue credit left right and centre, she wouldn't have a career right now. Beyonce does it and she's queen of the universe. Give me strength. FlyingF 485
Lol at people calling Beyonce an authentic genuine artist, she doesn't even write her own songs there are more good songs on Lemonade than there are on Joanne, but the ones on Joanne that are good I enjoy more than any song on Lemonade, if that makes sense

LEMONADE was a political statement and very personal for her. She had strong visuals to back it up. It was for sure her BTW. Joanne is a fantastic album which is also very personal but doesn't really touch on any major issues (other then Angel Down) that are going on currently. Thats why LEMONADE was so impactful. this

Toph 375
Hm, I would not say the songs don't work as singles comparatively between the albums, but cohesively, as a whole, with its message, lyrical content, musical content etc, I would say only one of the two is truly boundary pushing, and that is Joanne. With that said, Lemonade easily is the best album of 2016. Beyonce is a true artist now, she proved it with Lemonade IMO. With that said, Joanne is the reverse-gaga musical experience we've been waiting for.

Although, the rest of your content is based on preferences in music. I find the album a very great record, memorable, and fun listen to. It's very artistic. Yes, it has its similarities of Beyoncé, but it is a great record. Although, critics are very harsh on Gaga. It's not surprising. On the other hand, critics are rarely harsh on Beyoncé. @Thomas P I'm so ready for your response. I disagree with everything said. That's the response that I can post without getting a WP. Although I do agree that if Beyoncé released Joanne it would have been much more acclaimed. EDIT and I do agree that Joanne deserves to be praised to high heavens too. I’m a simple guy to please, if you like Melodrama, we chill.
notamember 667
I LOVE Beyoncé, but in all honesty, Lemonade is highly overrated, especially on metacritic. I always listen to her albums when they come out and Lemonade has very few actual good songs. It has 3 really GREAT songs in my opinion: Freedom, 6 Inch, and Daddy Lessons. The rest are literally filler. It's probably because many of the songs have Hip-Hop influences and that's not really what I like, so this is a very subjective opinion. But I still adore her. Joanne is, subjectively, a better album as a whole because I like almost every song. Just ny opinion though.
Anderson123 38,181
They're both good records. The thing is, Lemonade is a project that involved like 20-30 people, it's not just Beyoncé's album. I admire her because she can dance, she can sing, but they've made her a brand.

Joanne is also very personal to Gaga and it has at least two songs that have a great message. Come To Mama has the message of love and freedom, and Angel Down is a shout to all the violence that is going on right now.
