I respect your opinion but I extremely disagree.

First off, one of the main themes she grappled with in this album is finding herself in relation to her father and her other interpersonal connections in her life. She noticed as she grew up the immense impact his sister's passing away caused on her father. His drinking. His emotional state. All from a family member she never met but saw the profound impact it had as she developed throughout her lifespan. I understand the meaning of wanting to live through somebody else's shoes. Technically Taylor Swift wrote her 1989 album through the lens of somebody who grew up in the 1980s. And Sia's most recent album literally was written for other artists.

Gaga is a performance artist. As other people have mentioned, since the beginning of her music career she's talked about Joanne and we knew the impact the death of her aunt had on her life. Especially since Lupus runs in her family. We have the restaurant, her saying the name before performances.

Her tweets sums it up perfectly:

@PhilTBH that's exactly what I wanted to do. I felt deeply connected to her as I struggled to get along w my father and understand him.

#JOANNE  How do you live every moment as your last in the name of someone who can't.

Joanne was my father's sister. Died 1974. She was 19.

I lost my best friend in 2010 to a drunk driving accident. I would love to have the ability to carry on the amazing legacy he began and the years he wasn't able to truly live out. Joanne (being in her middle name) is literally with her forever. Her legal name, her tattoos. My father also had a brother who was killed on his bike when he was just 24. I think other people can relate to this. What other artists have subtext like this and deep personal meaning? Not many. When she was doing the Dive bar performance she first said "My Name is Lady Gaga BUT TONIGHT you can call me Joanne." Because that night she performed songs to musical styles she felt influenced from while writing this album in that particular psychological space.

Shes so invested in this music she created and as always she's fully immersing herself in her creative process to portray this music the way SHE wants, and not forced to as she was in the past.

Just like she was in an egg for over 24 hours to kick off the BTW era, and just like she truly believed she was a living breathing Botticelli painting. I think this is all perfectly acceptable and she continues to devote herself spiritually and emotionally to her music.

I am turned off by it because literally every era has the same shticks, and this one is supposed to be relaxed, natural, her true self.... and then the same show again, in different costumes
