She's not doing a pop voice in Perfect Illusion. It's a rougher, rockier voice. They are comparing PI to Ariana Grande's music, which is NOT the same. Compare her voice to someone like Bruce Springsteen instead, like the people in the comments are saying. Gaga is a chameleon and should not be judged against pop queens. She should be judged against ALL MUSICIANS.

I appreciate what the expert is saying. But appraising her voice in a song like this using terms of operatic precision is sorta odd. 

It's pretty apparent that Gaga's voice is exactly as it's intended to be by the team that produced and signed off on the song.

I feel like the vocal coach has no idea of concepts in music. He's all about voice technique instead of tone, concept, etc. I feel like he doesn't get the song when he compares her high belts with Ariana's one. While Ari's are extremely sweet, Gaga's are bitter and they are done like that in purpose. She's not singing for the NOTES, she's singing for the EMOTIONS. I hope the full album is extremely husky

Nothing about Ariana's voice is nice to me wtf? Never have I thought Gaga struggled in PI vocally. There are other songs where she probably struggled more than PI so this guys opinion is ajdfskjdf

Also wouldn't she have been guided by Don Lawrence? One of the most successful vocal coaches in the world? Surely he would have guided her into the right direction. If PI is the outcome, then it's the right direction for her, end of story.

This is exactly the reason. Anyone who knows Gaga's catalogue of songs and covers knows she has excellent technique and full control of her voice. Just listen to Cheek to Cheek at the 2015 Grammys. At the beginning, she hit those high notes flawlessly and her voice sounded smooth and silky.
