Mainstream pop music hadn't heard key changes in a long time. And almost everyone that has listened to the song loves it. I think that If PI becomes a hit, key changes might become a new musical trend. Ariana did one in Greddy for her Dangerous Woman record
Werk 13,166
I don't see the hype around key changes like a singer singing higher isn't really anything new or exciting to me tbh
Kermit 15,807
Every artist has a song with a key change. It's never been a trend. It's been music. “For me, insanity is super sanity. Allan 3,875
Guys, try not to miss the point of the question, the OP is not asking if someone in the pop industry has ever used the key change, the question is if it could get back to the current mainstream pop music trends like the summer-ish sounds (Sorry, Lean On, Cool Girl, Better by Britney) or trap/dubstep drops a while ago. I can't really see it becoming a trend because, as mentioned above, it requires good vocals to execute. And in my opinion, a key change is kinda like a surprise, it's awesome when you hear it for the first time, but if listen to two or three songs on the radio that have the key change, the surprise effect won't be as strong in the second or third one. AlexanderMagno 10,746
Seriously, a key change is not that special, I don't get the hype around it most songs have a kick when they reach the last chorus, PI is a key change... It's one of the most common things in pop music

Lassex 1,169
I don't think so. Every now and then pop songs have a key change though. But to be honest, Perfect Illusion's key change is pretty disappointing, so it'll not be a ''trendsetter''

KyliesChild 16,907
A key change has been popular since the beginning of music, especially in pop.
huttont 5,252
I feel like key changes are not super common anymore but they aren't unseen. A key change is when all sounds whether it is the vocals and any chords are taken a half step up for a given amount of time. In PI, she takes the melody AND the music up half a note. Artists can sing or play music higher without it being a key change.
