Award Shows ratings are mostly determined by what the show was like the previous year. Last year the show was good but very lack luster causing many people to lose interest this year, BUT seeing how this VMAs slayed next years ratings will be higher if they play their cards right with the performers and hosts like they did this year.

I gotta say, I don't think the public cared for this year. I have read very few positive comments. If anything, I think this year killed the show.

im not trying to be harsh, that's just my observation

I still think it is an important award show, otherwise it wouldn't be able to pull in the likes of people like Rihanna, Beyonce and Britney (the latter two typically do not perform just anywhere these days), but its significance is quickly fading and I do think it is facing an existential crisis. The VMAs made sense at a time when MTV had shows like TRL and Making the Video as part of its line-up, but it now just seems out of place with most of their other programming and the ratings are showing that people are losing interest even with an all-star line-up.

I think it really sucks that the YouTube Music Awards were so poorly planned and managed back in 2013 because it really does seem like YouTube would be the natural successor to MTV in terms of hosting a music video award show.

I don't think YouTube gave up  the idea

"But online, MTV points out that clips from the show generated 62.8 million video streams, up 70 percent from last year. The show also drew 45.8 million streams on Facebook, up a huge increase of 940 percent. "

I really feel like more people will tune in. The online views for this show alone show that there is a sparking interest again.

Okay, that looks like good for MTV. We'll have to see next year.

Definitely, I thought Miley was a lot better then the hosts this year. The performances were of the same quality.

It's exactly how I felt watching it last night. Everything was wrong about it, from the boring red carpet to the hosts (I mean, who thought this was a good idea to gather the 4 or 5 most annoying persons in the USA and give them the reins of the show...?), and I'm not even mentioning the unmemorable performances. Even the better parts were wrong: Beyoncé's medley was too long, and I got slightly fed up with Rihanna.... and I LOVE Rihanna.

The VMAs are a mess. They try to be cool and hip with the times but it cringe worthy AF. Nothing's about music as much as it is about trying to make something the media will grab and eat up.

Ratings might not have been the best, but everyone is talking about it on every platform possible and the impact it has on the performer's sales. Still, a win. They also went up in streaming.

Haven't watched since 2013.  If Gaga is the headline act, I will watch again.

I live outside the space time continuum.
