giskardsb 12,565
good interview with John Mayer, but there is one part in particular I suspect is exactly what Gaga has been going through and where she is at now in her journey musically. I think she has probably definitely moved to the mentality that "touching people" with her music is most important to her. JM: For me what happened was I sort of lost track of my career in a bad way at first, but then it ended up being a good thing. I was sort of unsuccessful at being a commodity sort of pop star, and followed it as far as I could follow it before it ate me alive. Which is interesting now, I see it happening to other people, people I know and love. I have so much grace and compassion for that rocket ride; it really is a rocket ride. And when I got thrown off of the horse, I kind of treated my injuries from it and I asked myself: How much did I really want to be on that horse? How much fun was I really having touring the world on this sort of, world domination scheme. How happy did that make me, you know? And then what I ended up doing was making a couple of records that weren’t designed to be like hit records, and they really touch people. People would come up to me, not as many, but they would have more to say about the work you know. And I never really quite got back on the horse, and I realized, well, this is really incredible to have this kind of career where as a musician, I am constantly challenged, constantly engaged and I’m always feeling.. Like I tell you I’m 38, I look at other people’s careers all through the map of time and I go: wow at that point in their career they were putting out greatest hits records. And they were being sort of regarded as: well here they are. And for me, whether or not I’m regarded that way I feel very much like I’m on the outset of my career. You know, and everything feels brand new. http://m.bozemanmagazine.com/articles/2016/08/01/26480_backstage_at_alpine_valley_with_john_mayer
retroglamx 5,177
Sounds plausible. He also posted about Currents (Tame Impala's latest album) being a masterpiece and Kevin being the man. SO maybe this confirms a duet with Gaga for LG5 or some sort of writing collab. /not don't take this post serious. at all. Pink flamingos always fascinated me. Whispering 18,865
I've seen JM live when he was at the top of the charts and when he wasn't and he is an extremely talented musician and songwriter. Mayer also puts on a very enjoyable and engaging live show. I feel like now he is at a place where he is purely enjoying being an artist. That's a place where all true artists (not manufactured ones) hope to get to eventually. I do believe that Gaga is experiencing the same evolution along the way. Sister 9,907
That is a good understanding that he is sharing and I can totally imagine that Gaga would relate to it, though I am no fan of John Mayer, he does seem like the sort of artist to be able to get in touch with his emotions and feelings and learn from them, as Gaga does as well. The future's uncertain and the end is always near.
Shipper 13,090
In Maslow's Hiearchy of Need, self actualization and fulfillment is at the top of the pyramid. I'm glad he enjoys what he is doing now and there's no need to pander to the charts or his label. Loving what you do and making a living out of it is something we all dream to achieve. Gaga farming and taking her sweet time in making music made us lose our minds but she does not need to pander to her fans no more and release hit after hit just to please us. She offers something and people are free to take it or leave it. That must feel so liberating by not being tied up by expectations and demands of people around her too much. 🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶🩶
crisTEAne 21,059
i don't think so. if you look at gaga's NME interview, you can see that she already had this realization during the creation of BTW (the album). that was the turning point for her because she accepted her new platform ("woman of the world") and used it to initiate different kinds of shitstorms: one of them being fashion-oriented (which she rather associated with BR), while the other being cultural (BTW). i think during BTW and ARTPOP she tried to combine the two. what's changing now, however, is that—at least, as i see it—she's focusing more on the latter: creating another, more general (not LGBT-specific) cultural shitstorm through her music that will resonate with people both on a spiritual and on a political level. that's my understanding of "touching people" in a socio-political context. if you hurt taylor swift, i'll hurt you back
