Researchers used radiocarbon dating to determine the ages of 28 of the animals, and estimated that one female was about 400 years old. The team found that the sharks grow at just 1cm a year, and reach sexual maturity at about the age of 150. The research is published in the journal Science. Lead author Julius Nielsen, a marine biologist from the University of Copenhagen, said: "We had our expectations that we were dealing with an unusual animal, but I think everyone doing this research was very surprised to learn the sharks were as old as they were." The former vertebrate record-holder was a bowhead whale estimated to be 211 years old. We become more susceptible to various carcinogens/random mutations/gradual ravages of age the older we get- hence why, as our life expectancy increases so does various diseases, including greater probabilities of cancer (excluding of course our own Anthropocenec toxins filling our air etc).. We came from much smaller creatures in which it was about quantity of lifeforms to statistically have a better chance of survival opposed to quality, or age. We (or more specifically all of our anatomical makeup) just aren't made to endure that much time and function. In a way it is a bit of a blessing. At this rate, I don't want to be around in 100 years, it's bad/hot/violent enough now tbh The article also discusses how most of the Greenland sharks left that have been discovered are antiquated males or "teenagers" who would not be able to reproduce until their bodies hit the 150-year mark; the number of of-age females presumptively nearly wiped out from the demand for their liver enzymes back in the mid-20th Century.. Perhaps we are slowly witnessing the demise of yet another species, but one whose life could still endure then diminish after we are gone, as many may still make it for centuries, as long as we don't continue to acidify and heat the waters too quickly..
