Henryy 11
I'm hoping, once they break up, Zayn fails to start a solo career so he does a nude photoshoot to regain public interest.
Americano 31,061
Well obviously. They have released like one single. But Bieber and 1D in the UK's following among the pre-teen market (helped by twitter) is significant. It doesn't feel that big to you, maybe, but that's because you're not a preteen girl (which I am). If it doesn't feel big to the general audience, it's too narrow of a fanbase and it's not going to last. Everyone FELT Britney Spears/Lady Gaga/etc. rise to their fame, regardless of whether they were watching them or not. If you don't have that factor, it's incredibly difficult to avoid has-been status.
Jack 2
I'm not familiar with Westlife. (I'm not dissing them, I'm just not very big on the UK music scene.) And yeah, that's what I meant. Boy bands don't have longevity, since the one rule with them is that they almost always break up. Yeah, I know what you mean. But if they broke up, they might not have bad solo careers, I could see Harry having a good solo career a bit like JT. The rest I'm not sure though, maybe the Irish one (Niall) could be fairly big in his home-turf, the rest probably not.

toanythingtaboo 5
Even the biggest boybands typically only have up to 5 years shelf life. Take That are a total exception and only managed it because they have a talented songwriter as their frontman so they didn't need to buy themselves a hit to get back in the game. I'd give 1D about 2, maybe 3, years depending on whether XF is still around to prop them up. Only a matter of time before one or two want to go solo, someone wants to leave, they get tired of the relentless schedule or they grow out of being in a cheesy popband. Jack 2
I think Zayn genuinely could have a future doing high-level modeling. Probably, I don't think he's all that nice though. Well, If you asked me in an honest, non-bias state of mind, The X Factor hasn't been a prop for them anyway. Sure they're known as a group from The X Factor, but I think regardless, they would have had the success they had because they're accessible for 13 year olds etc, bit like Justin Bieber. Also, this might be a bit of a throw-off statement, because their audiences are so different, but I don't think the statement about buying a hit is neccesarily a problem for 1D, seeing as Rihanna is currently doing it and Britney has been too for years. Their future may depend on using XF as a prop, though. It's a vital promotional platform for XF alums and if that crutch were taken away (and not replaced by another hit Simon Cowell production), they - along with the others - would be at a severe disadvantage. I wasn't saying buying a hit is bad as such, it's more a case of being a catch 22 for acts who fall out of favour. If you don't write your own material, you're totally dependent on other people giving you hits...and getting those hits relies on your profile and chequebook. If you're at the top of your game (Rihanna), then you get first pick of the hit songs, but if you aren't then your ranking will determine where in the pecking order you lie. i.e. if you are a flop/struggling, then you'll be low ranked and pick up whatever's left behind (the **** songs) from the more successful artists taking what they want. Sometimes you may luck out and pick a winner that nobody suspected, but that's obviously rare because these people know what makes a hit. So, if 1D flop and fall out of favour, they won't be able to buy themselves back into favour...because they've fallen out of favour. That's the catch 22, and it's why so many manufactured pop acts disappear. This is why I'm not worried for Gaga at all, because if you're self-reliant and can write an absolute smash single independently...then you can jump back into the game whenever you want. No need to rely on buying yourself a hit or some producer/songwriter taking pity on you.

Mole 0
"Gay marriage is an oxymoron and an abomination. The gospel frees us from being pleased in wrong ways, and frees us to be pleased with God's." No need to rely on buying yourself a hit or some producer/songwriter taking pity on you. I see what you're saying about the catch 22 thing, but I still don't think 1D need to worry, they recorded 86 tracks for their album and (arguably) they weren't all bad nor good, so they had to pick the best 13 of them, paying the other 76 dust because they weren't good enough. Plus, it's arguable whether or not the artist should get to chose the songs or not, because they could favour 13 songs to another but the 12 the favoured could be the worst 12 songs recorded. I suppose it's the same situation for an artist like Gaga who writes. There was a reason SOFY didn't make the album and there were probably loads more like it, because even if you like it and even if you aren't a label puppet, you need to put the best songs on your album, because if you don't your not going to sell. Oh my god, if we were having this conversation 1 month ago, you wouldn't see me supporting 1D, like what even.. :sam:
