those cringeworthy choreographies lololololol

not "cringeworthy" at all, in fact the choreo in the last two videos ( same dance company) is quite good.  The first one the choreo wasn't bad although the execution was sometimes off.

It's modern dance, not pop.

i'd actually say those videos are very pop. this is the same stuff choreographically that artists like sia are marketing on right now. tight narrative directly following the lyrics of a pop song.
you're right, cringeworthy is maybe a bit of an overstatement. i'm just an anti "competition dance" snob, that's all. there's something, in my opinion, extremely ingenuine and over dramatic about that world of performance. too many tricks and trying to show-off for my taste. my opinion isn't a general consensus by any means :unicorn: many people love and enjoy the spectacle, and i respect that. (doesn't mean i'm not going to share my opinion tho hehehe)
also, i've been studying classical modern dance (i.e. merce cunningham/josé limon/trisha brown/lester horton/bebe miller etc) since i was 11, so i feel i have at least a general understanding of modern dance techniques. idk if you study or not, but here's a video of a piece i made earlier this year which kind of encapsulates what i like and do in dance

wow that turned into something much longer than i expected lololol whoops

Nicely done.   I don't "study" dance, but I'm an aficionado of all styles.  You are right, technical tricks and techniques can be overused, but also can push a performance when used correctly.  It's all tools in the toolbox to be used as needed, but as any musician knows you need to be careful that your performances don't just become all tricks.  To me good group choreography is like a visual musical score... I can see the harmony and individual melody lines working together.

I do love Choreographers like Sonya Tayeh where their own sense of personality comes through in the choreo.  Her routines are basically the only reason I watch So You Think You Can Dance.

You should avoid the term "cringeworthy" simply because somebody that has actual knowledge can have better critiques with specific issues than using a generic derogative that has no actual meaning.  Your explanation of why you find it "cringeworthy" makes sense. "Cringeworthy" however is used by people who know they don't like something but can't explain why (yes I hate that word, along with "overproduced" and many other cheap and ultimately meaningless derogatives thrown around on pop forums). :)

Yes dance is so similar to music is a ton of ways. And the idea of visualizing a music score is so interesting to me. I grew up studying music before dance but I haven't ever tried visualizing choreographic structures with that mindset. I might have to keep that in mind when making future works.
I just checked out Sonya's choreography reel and I love the work she did with Kylie and Florence, it's really left of center for a typical pop tour. Yes yes!
I feel you on checking my use of cringeworthy. And I think you touched on why I, without much thought, chose the word. While I know a lot about dance, I'm not looking to spend my time critically analyzing the pieces on here because no one really cares to see that. It doesn't fit within this context of GGD. Just saying "cringeworthy" is definitely a meaningless/useless word but it fits within the "pop forum" context, like you said. I would never use it in real life if I was asked to critique a work, you know? But this platform isn't for my deconstruction of the work, I just write what I feel in that moment and leave it. Hahaha. Other's interpretations are not something I care about. If they want to know what I mean by what I said, they can start a conversation (i.e. this lovely one we're having :))
