I hate how young singers nowadays sing with that 'pretentious' voice

God, I hate that ****. But you know whats worse? That god awful voice cracking kind of singing where it sounds like they are struggling. I am so glad Gaga sings very outwardly.

Here's an example at 0:55. I want to stick an ice pick through my ears.

I really dont like this girl.

I'm totally with you. I hate it when singers try to make up for poor vocals with that pretentious sound that's weak, paper thin, cracks and it actually gets praised for being "authentic!" Even worse, some will call them unique and special when their voice is a dime a dozen. I remember a god-awful auditionee on The Voice UK was this guy with an acoustic guitar that sounded just like every other guy just like him in the charts now and Tom Jones told him that he had such a unique sound to his voice. You doubt the credibility of legends when they spout stuff like this. There's very few exceptions I make to this vocal. I like Passenger - he might not be the best singer but his lyrics are really good and as long as they move me, I can handle an under-par voice. The same for Ellie Goulding's second album (not so much the rest of her stuff, though). When the music's good, it's a lot better to handle. But awful music plus an awful voice isn't cutting the mustard.

Anyone remember this girl from The X Factor 2008? Every song she sang cracked all over the place and her diction was terrible and yet the judges fawned over her and she was allowed to have a career afterwards:

Please, world, let us move on from such vocals. I'm not asking for powerhouse vocals, just good vocals. Stop praising mediocraty and fakeness.

LOL Sorry dude but that's not what this thread is about. Sorry you got called out and know you're wrong.

Exactly. If anything, being able to control your voice and how you sing shows more talent.

So sorry that you got pissed off, but most people agree with me, and so sorry that your indie favs can't sing as well as Queen Mariah.

The artists who use it and are masterful at it sound amazing, because they can REALLY sing. I like to think that the 'indie voice' is their 'base' voice, but they are talented beyond that limited range.

BANKS is an amazing example of this. Listen to how her voice changes throughout this song from 'indie voice' to belting. She has lots of vocal tricks (much like Gaga) and she keeps it fresh on all of her songs regardless of her base voice. Listen to Drowning after to see her variety.

Artists that are unable to break out of the voice you described are frustrating because their music tends to have the same melodies and themes. When R&B was going strong in the 90s, NOBODY sounded the same. I was waiting for today's music to finally happen because I've been a fan of smooth, synth-y melancholic music my whole life, but having it all the time with the same voice on every person has really ruined it.

@Zelda will LOVE this thread, we talk about this topic at least once a week.

I am very old, so please forgive me for not knowing these artists names.  However, I think they pretty much all sound the same...Kinda like someone cloned their vocal cords.  For instance...Today I was trying to tell my son that the artist Daya was the same girl who sings Lost Boys.  I swear, I thought they were the same person.  I hear a lot of the same key/warble/verbratto/strain/almost flat tones to their voices.  It seems to me that all you need today is a catchy tune, and a really good sound engineer.
