Affected accent, it's what i call it. It gives me murderous instincts. It's the new rule, in late 90's 00's it was nasal tone.

People try to hard to be someone who they're not this days. Mostly very few people know who they really are.

They just use it when performing. It's their performance 'voice'.

I am not bothered though, these videos on OP are great songs, why let yourself distracted by menial things that cloud your judgement on a song?

In the 90s everyone tried to be Sinead O'Connor, Alanis included but guess what, nobody got annoyed by it, instead embrace them cos these people make good music.

If they want to use that singing technique, just let them be tbh. They can still sing and write their own songs at the end of the day.

So glad someone mentioned Selena Gomez's Good For You. It's probably the most blatant example of the "indie pop voice". In the entire song and especially the bridge she's not only forcing her voice to sound like she's having a throat spasm but, on top of that, it's been altered afterwards, too, and if you listen to the solo version and only pay attention to her voice, it's almost hard to believe there's a human sound involved in the process.
