Because her character (and name) was based on Elizabeth Báthory.

But in the show there was no explanation. Mr March wasn't a Count so it didn't really make sense why she was called the Countess. Not that it's a big issue. I guess you could accept she just called herself that.

I love judas SO MUCH but I canʹt look like a copycat of JLO!!!!

I always thought she was called the Countess bc she's a vampire?? Like Count Dracula

I don't see how that matters :emma: So many other things were also unexplained, like how her accent changed so much from her youth character (I'm guessing there's a bit of Hungarian influence there, which would also fortify the connection between her and Báthory). I think it's just for the viewers to make the connection between her name (Elizabeth) and the idea of a countess, which sure would lead many to think of Elizabeth Báthory because of her character.

It matters in good storytelling. :laughga: But you can't really expect much from Ryan Murphy tbh.

I remember her name being Elizabeth Cortez... but there's no sign of that being true. :udidnt:

Where did I hear it then? :deadbanana::deadbanana:

But to explain 'The Countess'.. what I understood is that it was her Job Title in the Hotel Cortez.

She was the Countess of the hotel the same way Chloe Sevigny was called the Governess, if that makes sense.  :spin:

The real question is, why was she called The Countess?

Yeah, the reasoning behind the creators naming her that were a) Bathory reference, and also likely b) Dracula reference (there was a lot of narrative similarities between her and the tragedy of Dracula, and also direct visual tie-in with Nosferatu in the first episode).

In the show, however, I don't think it was ever fully explained. In fact, I think it was lightly played for laughs with the sort of tongue-in-cheek prod that it will never be fully mentioned. I mean:

Countess: I'm The Countess

John Lowe: Countess of what?

Countess: With those blue eyes, I'll be The Countess of whatever you like, baby.

Donovan, in the background: *puts face in hand in embarrassment*

There was a BTS video explaining that The Countess would take on kind of different personas with different people, and that we don't really see her true colors until around episode 7.

On one hand, I think it's brilliant. On the other hand, it's a total justification for Gaga (and the writers) trying to figure out who The Countess was along the way, lol (I mean, going from 2 episode arc to an 8 episode arc to a whole season arc? bound to have some

Well, Báthory was already linked to Dracula (she's also sometimes called Countess Dracula), so that reference is sort of already in the reference to Báthory I guess.

Agreed about both statements :poot:

yep, but in terms of her accent, as a hungarian myself, there is no hungarian influence there, i can assure you.

Ah, I always thought Gaga was going for some sort of European caricature, haha. I don't know what a Hungarian accent sounds like, yet!
