UK issues travel warning to Southern US states over anti-LGBT laws

(CNN) - North Carolina and Mississippi's controversial new laws affecting LGBT rights are already threatening to cost the U.S. states millions in lost business and tourism.

That situation could be set to worsen after the UK government updated foreign travel advice warning British citizens about risks visiting America's south.

The update issued by the UK Foreign Office on its website under the heading of "local laws and customs," highlights potential problems for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LBGT) people.

"The U.S. is an extremely diverse society and attitudes towards LGBT people differ hugely across the country," it says. "LGBT travelers may be affected by legislation passed recently in the states of North Carolina and Mississippi."

Great, another thread for GGD users to issue blanket statements condemning the entire country. 

LGBT people by and large, even in Mississippi and North Carolina, do not face discrimination from going into a shop (much less tourist shops) and buying something. Laws like this are mostly directed at bakeries that make wedding cakes and allowing them not to take part in a gay wedding, which is pretty reasonable if you truly think you'll be punished by some superior being.

Why don't the British stick to issuing travel warning to places that it's actually dangerous to be gay? For instance the majority of Europe's own goddamn landmass, including Russia.

Frankly I'd be OK with them doing what they want it if they were living in a theocracy.

They don't though, so it's not reasonable. It's also nitpicky, since the majority of these people already violate many of the Old Testament's (and many others the New) "guidelines" yet choose to emphasize this particular issue because if their engendered bigotry.

Homosexuality is legal in Russia, but there is still intolerance among some sections of the population. Be careful about public displays of affection. In June 2013 a law banning the promotion of ‘non-traditional sexual relations’ entered into force, but the definition and scope of prohibited activity is vague. Foreign nationals convicted under this law could face arrest and detention, fines and deportation. There have been reports that instances of harassment, threats, and acts of violence towards the LGBT community have increased following the introduction of the law.

 They're just updating their travel warnings. Don't deny what's happening in US. Blanket statements are terrible, but discrimination do exist.

Seriously though, it is perfectly safe to travel to these states....but I am happy these states are getting backlash from every angle.

If it's a deeply held religious belief, I don't see why it's ridiculous to force a cake maker to provide a cake to a gay wedding. Why tf would you want to force a person to bake you a cake anyways?

But for the vast majority of transactions, such as selling to t-shirt to a gay person, that would be totally ridiculous to deny them service. It has nothing to do with religious beliefs.

The travel warning is entire political. There is nothing unsafe about these places just because of this law.

Good news.

But if they just issues travel warning for political issues, I think that really deteriorates the legitimacy and urgency of travel warnings. They should be reserved for actual dangerous situation, and the bathroom law really don't make these states more dangerous.

They run the risk of conditioning their citizens to brush off travels warnings because they'll think it's a silly political move and that runs an actual danger to the public.

Precisely, no one should be cancelling travel plans for safety reasons  The amount of people who are LGBT friendly far outweighs the idiots who support this law.

Don't let the backwards ass GOP government scare you away, North Carolina really is a lovely place to visit. Gorgeous mountains, pristine beaches, and dynamic cityscapes.
