Michael Jackson is probably one of the most famous people that ever were. Everyone knows the moon walk, and he has some of the most instantly recognizable hit songs like Billie Jean, Thriller, Bad, Smooth Criminal, etc. Even though his fame declined somewhat in 00's, he was still widely known all over the world.

Now, my question is does Madonna rival Michael Jackson in terms of global fame? Does she have imagery and songs iconic enough that a little kid and an old man in some random country would be able to tell in a second that it belongs to her?

no cause even if they bashed him several times, people actually liked Michael Jackson. What I mean is that at this point there's too many people who dont recognize madonna's huge impact in music and pop culture, while no one ever said "he's the new michael jackson! MJ is over!"

I feel awful saying this, but maybe when she dies? People always tend to appreciate someone and listen to them once they're gone. :ohno:

You're probably asking on the wrong site.

I personally think both of their fame's are hard to compare as they have different accomplishments and highlights in their careers. They're both legends so to me, it's kind of pointless trying to put one above another.

Michael is bigger, but before he died no... he wouldn't have been able to tour in America. The GP changed once they lost him sadly. I always loved Michael. He's the king. She's the queen. People always look at a king more... my answer was yes though to the question. ;)

in 1991, the firm Knight Ridder published an article on the subject titled Madonna even controversial for scholars, citing comments from several teachers and other personalities.[227] Meanwhile, Barbara Stewart from Orlando Sentinel, said there was a "growing number of "Madonna Studies" in the United States, [where authors] wrote their works for academic journals and conventions". She added that overseas for many "was a laugh hear of Madonna Studies". She continued that "neither this study theme sit well with some students of higher education".[226] Beyond all this, organizations like the set of liberal arts colleges 7 sisters teach courses that examine the influence of Madonna in culture.[228] In this regard, the French scholar Georges Claude Guilbert wrote in the book Madonna as Postmodern Myth (2002), Princeton, Harvard, UCLA, the University of Colorado and Rutgers were the first to propose courses "about" Madonna. He added that even at the University of Amsterdam was created the elective academic discipline, Madonna: The Music and the Phenomenon, within the Department ofMusicology.[7]

hard to compare? I think they have enough things in common to be compared: both American, started their solo careers around the same time, kept making music all the way through to the 21st century, etc.

They both are legends in the history of pop music, that goes without debate, however I would like to know your opinion on which one of them made a bigger influence on humanity.

actually i believe her fame and legacy is bigger than his bc she has managed to have a lasting impact on society (feminism, sexuality, liberalism, spirituality etc) . michael jackson is a legendary performer, but madonnas power & message went far beyond the actual performance which is exactly why she had the success she had. her themes were far more controversial.
