I know the history of POC, but today's society, being LGBT is way more polarizing than being black, just look at South Korea rn. Lady Gaga is the worlds most famous gay rights activist, and she is basically shunned out of the conversation if the public community. I have never heard people talk about Gaga like I have Beyonce and Taylor and it irks be to death. When she comes up, you can feel the awkwardness, if you're a Gaga, fan, "whoops you must be gay!" It's ridiculous. Yes, Gaga still has **** going against her too. First of all, no. Second of all, just because you think one issue is more important than the other, that doesn't mean we can pretend one of them is solved and ignore it, and only pay attention to the other one. No. Race and LGBT+ issues are both equality important and in many ways tied to each other, so do not do diservice to them like that. Gaga was wrong for this, plain and simple. It's easy for people of the privileged race/gender/sexuality to be like "I don't define myself" when they haven't been discriminated against. It simplifies the issues and it trivializes the struggles of people who have been treated negatively for being a certain race or sexuality. 100% correct. i just wish she ignored the tweet, there was really no point to her response and she's lucky that people havent caught onto this tweet because the media will take it and run with it. and the replies in this post are scaring me because people are trying to justify it instead of just moving on & accepting that she shouldnt have tweeted it in the first place. holy scheisse 22,254
Tbh Gaga comes from the cusp of the millenial generation and as a result is less versed in racial discourse than what is happening in pop culture today. She certainly did not say this maliciously but it still is not acceptable
Quartz 12,524
Her point is that race doesn't define her, that's it. People here saying that she is white, she should not downplay her privilege, blah blah blah. You are missing the point! We live at a time where anything done by anyone offends somebody ffs. Inside, we are really made the same. 🕊

First of all, no one made a thired about this bc this was obviously meant as light hearted, so I'm kinda annoyed someone had to take this too seriously. and idk where you are, but a lot more people are homophobic than racist, don't try it. So many people are so homophobic that the concept of being gay is so foreign they don't even talk about it openly, and no im talking about WW, not the US alone. i have never said one issue is more important than the other, nor do I think that, it's just tea you'll get more people uncomfortable around gays than POC. It's shocking, it's weird, it's polarizing, and I'm glad I'm alive in a time where this is being addressed, but in today's society, being LGBT is just way more shocking than being a POC (yas at the progress for race minoroties tho). do NOT act like she's ignorant about these issues. this is nothing but light hearted. the end. StarstruckIllusion 52,562
Who said Gaga doesnt acknowledge her privilege. Have you ever heard of the Born This Way era? Her saying she is just her, is Gaga downgrading us as lessors, being above all the stigma of race, and those who create it. She is saying that race doesn't matter, and should not be a thing people should get discriminated over, in a light hearted way.

There different ethnic peoples in Italy tho, but the majority of people in Italy are white. There is a lot of intermixing with North African. Latin American, and Asian people tho, and I'm sure Gaga has some of that, but ultimately she is white and does not experience any of the oppression that POC do. Doubt she has any of that. She definitely has North African. It's also possible she could have Moor dna in her bloodline which is an arab berber and black mix since she is sicilian on her fathers side. Though that doesn't mean she should claim to be black or arab since that goes way too far back.

Literally every person in the world is prejudiced, there isn't anyone who is exempt from systematic racism. Is violence against LGBT+ members much more common and severe? Yes, but homophobia not nearly as ingrained as racism is. Racism is an -ism, aka an system with political power. I'm sorry, but her saying that she is not a color is ignorant, because she is a color, she is white, and she gets privilege from it. Did she not think that critically of her words? Sure, but the point is that she has to be careful with her words when she's in the position that she is. There is no reason for me to believe that Gaga is well-versed on race-issues to the extent that she should be. That's not a bad thing, she just hasn't advocated for it to the point that I think she's woke on race issues. In other words, she obviously didn't have any malicious intents with her words, but that doesn't change the fact that she sounded very ignorant and that wasn't okay. Nicole 1,809
Eh. One thing I've learned is that the concept of being colourblind is actually incredibly offensive to people of colour. My friend told me (She's Indonesian) that whenever someone says that to her she just feels like she personally isn't being associated like "other" POC. She says that being dark-skinned is a huge part of her identity and for a white person to say "oh I don't see you as *insert race/colour" is just disregarding that part of her - pretending it's not there. Now that I've got that out of the way, I'm sure Gaga is aware of white privilege, I mean, she doesn't live under a rock. I did cringe at the tweet when I read it, but I can't assume she's an expert on all terms considered offensive. She, like everyone, is probably still learning. If she read any replies regarding why people might find it offensive, we can just hope that she understands why its offensive and will try not to let it happen again. If we immediately label people as racist after accidental incidences like this, without giving people the opportunity to learn and adjust their behaviour/perceptions, people won't be willing to learn, because ultimately, what's the point?
