That is, believe it or not, one of the main reasons the votes are given. The judges vote for the level of mainstream of a work, not for their quality (at least not always). This happens a lot in other categories like animation, where no adult animated movie has won the award, and it goes to more mainstream works like Pixar's, who are also viewed by the judges' children. Or perhaps, Lady Gaga is (in their eyes) very talented, but they want to give the oscar to Sam, the underdog? They seem to give multiple Oscars to one artist/movie every year who lacks a bit of talent (Gravity for example, too much hype for a simple movie). I fell down the stairs once as an actor.
