Pianist who toured on C2C to accompany Gaga's National Anthem Performance

A music teacher from Yorktown Heights' Soundview Preparatory School will accompany Lady Gaga on piano when she sings the National Anthem to kick off Superbowl 50, at 6:30 p.m. on CBS Sunday.

Alex Smith, who received his master's degree in jazz from SUNY Purchase, toured this summer with Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett and can be heard on their duet album, "Cheek to Cheek."

Smith is the music director for the Brian Newman Quintet, a group that frequently accompanies Gaga for her jazz performances and recordings, and also serves as the pianist and organist for Gaga's quintet. He played piano for the singer on the 2011 ABC-TV holiday special, "A Very Gaga Thanksgiving."

I hope I can post this in News! I think so. I know I wasn't the only one wondering if the piano would be used for the broadcast! Now we know!

How funny! I was actually hoping the exact opposite. That it'd be accompanied by an orchestra like Whitney Houston's performance because that would've made it so much more epic!

But I guess the piano's accompaniment is a good in between option haha!

I'm so happy for him! I went to that school for high school but he didn't start there until after I graduated. I still go there for alumni events every year and hope to meet him but he's always busy. I hope one day he can get me to meet Gaga.

That is grat she got a pianist than doing it herself, so she can concentrate more with her singing.

The lush life piano performances are all brilliant. And the pianist has  always been Mike from Tony's band, not Alex.
