Beyoncé - Formation

Okay I am a feminist and activist (not white btw) and whatever other label you want to throw on me but I do NOT like this song. I think it's a mess. And no, I am not saying that a strong black woman celebrating her independence is a mess, I'm saying this song specifically is a mess, because of its messy production, lyrics, and overall musical content (in my opinion).

LOVE THIS VIDEO AND EVERYTHING ABOUT IT

Not too crazy about the song, though. I like Beyonce as more of melodic singer and show-woman a la "4" but that's just me. It's already stuck in my head so it's probably a grower for me.

I hope she keeps those braids for a while though. Damn she looks good with them!

Embracing black culture is proudly proclaiming that when a man ****s you well, you most likely reward him with a delicious meal from Red Lobster. Black culture is awesome!

It's catchy. The lyrics are stupid a/f though. I can't. It's lazily written.

Also, if she really wanted to put across a message re: the police/violence situation that exists.. this song was not really the best avenue to do so. The message is lost amongst all the money/slay mentions throughout the song.

Exactly. This is what I was trying to say, and instead was called a troll, racist, etc.

I think people generally misunderstand what racism means. People drop the 'racist' card first chance they get to try and come out on top when offering a differing point of view. It happens all the time.

Because being black is not being edgy. It's just being black. Beyonce is not trying anything.

Users here see nothing racist in calling something "ratchet" or "edgy" because it aligns with black culture, but the prejudiced intent is very obvious.

I see the context of your reply.

And I very much agree with your statement on the semantics of utilizing "ratchet" and "edgy" in that manner.

3 points in and ready for more

See, this is a well formulated opinion that lacks the repugnant words "ratchet" and "edgy". I respect this opinion.

I didn't quite know how to respond to yours either. I think I got my point across pretty well though.

You're literally being racist by saying all of black culture is reduced to that lyric.

The video/music largely reflects popular southern Black culture, yes. That includes, but is not limited to,

1. The style of music (trap-- characterized by aggressive lyrics, 808 kick drums, sub-bass, etc.)

2. The dancing (also trap)

3. The imagery reflects the distrust of police among the black community, particularly with regard to police brutality.

But sure, reduce it all to the one line about Red Lobster.
