The board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences approved dramatic changes to alter its membership to increase diversity in a unanimous vote Thursday night.

The board which oversees the Oscars released  Friday what it called "historic" goals to counter an explosion of criticism over minority representation. In their biggest step, the governors committed to doubling the number of women and diverse academy members by 2020.

“The academy is going to lead and not wait for the industry to catch up,” said academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs in a statement. “These new measures regarding governance and voting will have an immediate impact and begin the process of significantly changing our membership composition.”

A 2012 report by the Los Angeles Times showed that Oscar voters were made up of 94% Caucasian and 77% male members. The academy did not list specific numbers for the new membership goals.

The problem isn't really the amount of black actors in the academy the problem is more than likely every other category...editors, cinematographers, composers of a score. That's probably IMO why the membership is so unbalanced.

Gosh this joke needs to stop :emma: They need to start caring more and giving more attention to people dying in Africa every day, than this fake racism on the oscar nominees

There is no word in any language to describe how hilarious I will find it when next year #OscarsSoWhite happens again. But it's an improvement, I guess. The next year that this happens they can blame a more diverse Academy!

You will never please everyone.

Well I don't see why not. Good on them :applause:

Given that we expect the Academy members to be impartial, I don't see why people here are assuming that more diversity will imply more minority nominations anyway. It just means that the minorities will provide more viewpoints and freshen up the system. That's always good.

Also minority potential nominees might be more at ease when they campaign for the Oscar.

There is always a problem bigger than the next.

I agree that the OscarsSoWhite thing is beyond ridiculous, but the steps being taken to alleviate these conceptions are hardly a bad thing on their own.

That's what I meant..They really think that this "racism" is the problem that black people have..But there are actually so much bigger problems...The media should start focusing on more important things than this crap.. But obviously they will never do that because the whole system is on purpose this way

Glad they went this way, it seemed that they were going to force minority nominations which I think would be unfair.

Hmmmm, by minority, did they refer to Blacks only,

or Asians, Native American, and Latin people included?

I am confused here since it's not plural. :gaycat:

Will there be more Asians and Latin actors and actresses get main roles?

And not just some side kick or comical roles.

Bigger chance to win any bonafide awards? :duck:

Will this be actually "historic"? We'll see, I guess. :gaycat:

Minorities are far more racist against white people than the opposite these days. Minority voters will simply vote for minority candidates for the sake of "inclusion and diversity"

This is going to be worse than the present situation of system voting, which is not perfect but at least is not skewed/depreciated by entering systematically ethnic/race/color/minorities factors. Bye Oscars.
