I feel like it really depends if Katy releases a serious album. If she does, it won't do well. People look to Katy for fun songs...not for anything serious. It's why Unconditionally flopped so hard. 

It also depends what Gaga releases. If she pops out an album that is serious, it could have a big effect on her career. It would be harder for her to ever go back to dance pop and it could do well at first. But Gaga is simply not the best slow song writer. Speechless is a rare time it was good, but her other attempts have been flat and boring. (Dope, looking at you). I think that's why she is dragging in Dianne and Ronson. 

Honestly, right now is a good time for Gaga to put out a dance pop record. No one else really is at the moment putting out a true dance pop (not electronic) album and she's good at it.

It really depends, but the basic statistics show Katy has a big chance to overshadow her again. For majority of people it's not a big deal - they just buy a song if they love it and stick to reliable brands (artists).

everybody know Katy always delivers hits so her initial lead single sales can be something like hello by Adele. Gaga will need to rely on longevity and sleeper hit kind of chart performance. 

But I think at the end it will be beneficial for Gaga. Look, Adele had a monster sales at beginning of 25 era and now what? Of course she doesn't promote it much but she just doesn't feel so cool anymore.

As Gaga said, people like to watch stars rise and fall, I don't think that there are enough people here to Stan for Katy growing into legend multi-diamond status. Because that's the only thing left she can achieve sales-wise. On the other hand Gaga is kinda forgotten so she may appear 'cool' again to the public if you know what I mean.

Katy Perry never said her album was coming this year? She didn't say anything about releasing new music.

 That being said, I support both artists and hope they can both achieve the success they both deserve. But I feel that GP has actually gotten tired of KP, the same way the GP was tired of Gaga during the ARTPOP era. KP needs to revamp her image and music style from the semi-flop which was the inconsistent Prism era or else she will lose out. I do want her to go back to her rock roots.

Now what? Her album is still selling 120k plus every week and is either the Billboard number one or two album. It is consistently selling very impressive numbers and is hitting a new platinum mark every few weeks. Her tour sold out in minutes everywhere and the demand is so high, resellers are selling tickets for ten to twenty times what they paid for. This era is still doing extremely well. 

No way is Katy's next era going to come close to Adele's.

I don't think she will, she's smart. And she definitely learnt from ARTPOP mistakes. She wants to surprise so I'm pretty sure lead single will be dropped when nobody will expect it

All of you are underestimating Katy so much and say she is on a "downward spiral". Why would that be? Because only 2 of her singles went top 10? But both of them were HUGE #1 SMASHES. You also have to keep in mind that Birthday and TIHWD received no promotion because Katy was on tour, let's not act like she tried to push those songs. And she was gone for 3 years. The public is not tired of her.  The only chance for Gaga to outchart her is if they don't release in the same timeframe, Katy simply became a stronger artist while Gaga was off being depressed and singing jazz songs.

She said the same for 1989 after Red, and she toured until June and released Shake It Off in August. Taylor has been on break since December and wouldn't have to do any promo for anything until the album comes out at the end of the summer, if it is coming out this year. Also a reporter from Vanity Fair and her father confirmed she is already writing for the album (and that was months ago) so..
