StrawberryBlond 14,832
Wow, DH was some grower, wasn't it? 19 WEEKS to get to #1. We clearly see that her Achilles heel is ballads. She clearly loves them but the public doesn't. And every era, her label make her release at least one, but they're very hit and miss. The failure of Birthday and TIHWD show that the public has really gotten bored of her packaged pop sound and her attempts at ripping off her previous efforts (TIHWD wants to be LFN so bad it hurts). It also goes to show that even with radio support, she isn't the draw she once was as Birthday apparently got a lot of support but the public were flat out uninterested. It baffles me why Prism was seen as such a hit album when 3 out of the 5 singles failed to reach top 10 in the US, her biggest market and most generous with #1's. With BTW, 4 out the 5 singles went top 10 in the US and the album sold more copies but many people regard BTW as a failure. It's all about perception, how the artist is hyped. It can make the public have a very different recollection of events.

I think people didn't start calling PRISM a flop or under perform because two of the single tracks that became some of her biggest and most well known tracks. Did Dark Horse or Roar get certified as a diamond and both video got her a billion views. I Only Stan For Risk Takers

Dark Horse had such a long climb because the day it was released as a promo single, it stayed on the chart and never left until the end if its run as a single. So Dark Horse "the album song" was charting consistently at the same time singles Roar and Unconditionally were charting and then Dark Horse became a single. It really was like the transition from TFM to BTW - still good, but after the success of the last one, it was a bit anti climatic. Yet, people were falling over themselves to say that Gaga had failed but Katy didn't experience that level of hate. Ok, BTW and TEOG may not have been on the same level of success as Roar and DH but they were still massive at the time and have gone on to become 2 of Gaga's most iconic hits. Even though Judas wasn't all that big, it still was a big top ten worldwide and the video's the most viewed video from the BTW era, her 6th most viewed video of all time and her third most liked video of all time. Y&I went to #6 in the US and sold over 2.3 million there alone. Yes, MTN was pretty floppy but considering how long the album had been out by then and how many copies it had sold, it managed to reach #29 and sell over 700k. Overall, she sold roughly 10.9 million singles in the US alone with that era. Katy sold around 15.3 million with hers. And Gaga made up for these numbers with album sales seeing as BTW's US sales were 2.3 million and Prism's at 1.6 million. And of course, worldwide sales were even better. And the tour would've sold more had she not broken her hip. Overall, it was one amazing era. It's even better in parts than I remember. Overall, it matched Katy's era very well (it actually scares me how similar they are in terms of chart postions and sales and touring locations. But it's not how the public seem to recall it because they were fed so much negativity whereas Katy was being fed positively. It makes all the difference. 23 minutes ago, DiscoHeaven23 said: Dark Horse had such a long climb because the day it was released as a promo single, it stayed on the chart and never left until the end if its run as a single. But in a way, it makes it even more impressive because it took so long to become a single yet managed to go to the top. Apparently, it wasn't originally intended to be a single and only became one because the public reacted to it so positively as a promo single, so since Unconditionally was flopping, I guess the team thought there was nothing left to lose. And it turned out to be one of the best choices they ever made. If only DWUW had been treated with the same respect in the same situation, it could have been a different story for its hit potential. To think, without DH, Katy would only have had one big hit that era and it might have affected the course of the album because of it. Here's hoping Gaga will have that luck this time.
