I understand that's the issue. But a world with 7 billion hungry people is even more at risk when companies like Monsanto drive conventional seed types to extinction.

This is such a lazy approach and argument from Monsanto supporters.

This was probably not directed at me but I'd just like to point out that thinking GMO's are ok does NOT equal supporting Monsanto. Monsanto is a disgusting corporation.

People talk so much about GMO, we don't have the distance to really know their effect even though i don't support GMO crops for various reasons. But besides that Monsanto is doing already quite bad stuff anyways.

Just from that article: Finally, Monsanto, the US-based, transnational company responsible for introducing multiplegenetically modified crops and numerous toxic chemicals into our environment – including saccharin, aspartame, polystyrene, DDT, dioxin, Agent Orange, petroleum based fertilizers, recombinant bovine growth hormones (rGBH), Round Up (glyphosate), Lasso (an herbicide used in Europe), Bt toxic plants, and more – will have to answer to the world for its reign of terror. Monsanto has acted with severe negligence, and the hubris and supremacy of a corporation given personhood, but no longer.

Have you seen what Agent orange does? Round up? If you think Monsanto does not deserved to be tried , well it's quite scary... Not everyone wants a future controlled by Monsanto's crops when you look at their past.

Yeah, I realized I was kind of warping the direction of my argument after I posted. Sorry about that, but we are talking about Monsanto being taken to trial, after all.

My final say on the matter is that I don't particularly have anything against GMOs. I don't know if they are or aren't detrimental to human health, but they are dangerous in other ways if they aren't regulated with the utmost care. I don't trust Monsanto to provide that care. Frankly, I don't trust any large entity like Monsanto to value quality and mindful control over profit and this trial must set the precedent so that maybe they will.

Am I to believe you have read research that claims they're safe? I have gotten with the 21st century. I grow my own organic produce and eat zero processed foods. I would NEVER put my health in their hands. They say they're safe to eat, but in reality Monsanto genetically modifies these foods to MAKE MONEY. These foods cause some bodies to mutate and develop cancer which sends them to doctors so that they can MAKE MONEY. Doctors tell patients to eat fresh food that secretly are GMOs so that industry can MAKE MONEY. It's all an evil scheme to earn profit regardless the health of the masses.

The food industry is so similar to the music industry in so many ways.

Bud, companies would make no matter what thats what they are there for

without these alterations the extra cost would be passed onto consumers.

Wed be back i to the days where 80% of your income/resourceswent just for food :rip:

Other solution can be explored and we know that. It's shame it's only in French because it was done by this French farmer but basically he is growing tomatoes without water, pesticides or anything like that. The way it works is that he puts the seeds in a "bad environment" where they will develop defense and become more resistant than the average tomato. It was really interesting and imagine, no water needed! It is a great finding, I will try to find a translation. Also it is interesting to see that GMO seem to be quite accepted in North America, while in many European countries it's still controversial. I think we should be careful, we don't need to go back to the Middle Age even if we don't use GMO.

The issues with gm crops go beyond whether it's safe for human consumption or not.  To name just one issue, there are huge environmental consequences of the higher levels of pesticide use that gm crops facilitate.

Pests are being wiped out to increase crop yields, without regard to the fact that they are part of an ecological system, and so doing that has impacts on a range of other elements in the system.

Seems a lot of people want to view the environment only in terms of its use for human animals, and don't think other life destroyed along the way matters. It doesn't work like that - everything's connected. For example, look up the impact of neonicotinoid pesticides on honey bees and bee Colony Collapse Disorder: you use pesticides that mess up bees on a massive scale and a load of other crops won't get pollinated. How does that help?

It's so easy to be cynical and dismissively insist everyone is in everything for profit, but it's not true. There are other forms of design that work with nature and not against it, that work towards solutions for the crises we're facing. Links below are quite specific examples of permaculture approaches, but it's a system of design applicable to any environment.

True, alternatives can be explored!!!

but id wanna be sure first alternatives wont lower yields

companies wont produce at a loss which means if food produce falls, its my grocery bill that will rise :crossed:
