However to some extend I agree. The crime legal system in Australia is mostly controlled by the states so sentencing is just appalling and bail systems are messy, particularly in Victoria. I believe a life sentence here currently stands at 25 years, not a persons whole life.

I understand the concept of false convictions. However in cases like this where the defendant surely committed the crime, I believe harsher penalties are applicable, whether that be life in prisons without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.
