"People shouldn't know anything about your s-xuality".Damon, who played Liberace's lover in HBO's 2013 film Behind the Candelabra, told The Guardian that he imagines "it must be really hard for actors to be out publicly."

"But in terms of actors, I think you're a better actor the less people know about you, period," he continued. "And s-xuality is a huge part of that. Whether you're straight or gay, people shouldn't know anything about your s-xuality because that's one of the mysteries that you should be able to play.

I was just trying to say actors are more effective when they’re a mystery," he told Ellen DeGeneres. "And somebody picked it up and said I said gay actors should get back in the closet. (Laughs.) I mean, it’s stupid, but it is painful when things get said that you don’t believe, and then it gets represented that that's what you believe."

if I had a man I'd take him to all the galas and would show myself with him in public. No need to hide it when straights don't hide their partners as well. #justice

I like when actors have a large personality and you know who they really are. It makes them being able to put on a character and pull it off that much more impressive.

I get what he was trying to say in relation to the mystery actors hold in real life, but he's really just promoting heteronormativity despite his intentions - we assume people are straight unless stated otherwise, that's not upholding a "mystery".

I agree tbh, as an actor your only job is to be able to portray different characters. Actors' personal lives really shouldn't be focused on at all and I do think that helps if you keep all s-xual details (incl. straight relationships etc.) private.

I agree in theory but actors aren't to blame for that ridiculous standard and they sure aren't gonna change it by being forced to come out to break that paradigm. And actors coming out doesn't even break that paradigm, let's be real :rip:

Being typecast as straight won't hurt your career; being typecast as gay might. Especially if you want to play romantic leading men and the studio wants to sell tickets in more homophobic regions of the world.

Hmm  In a way I agree because yes the focus should be 100% on their acting and not their personal life, but then it'd be unfair to them for having to give up or hide themselves ALL the time even when they're out of working hours. I'd be on board with his suggestion of all s-xuality relationships being a mystery if they were all on an equal level, but seeing as they aren't I don't think his suggestion works out

People look up to celebrities and actors though. Whilst I agree, a blank slate is good, I'm also aware of the inclinations it could have. It's hard to find a gay role model in your real life so kids and teens often look up to these people.

In the words of Mica; where have all the gay guys gone?

No. It is really important that closeted actors or celebs come out. So we can break those barriers and create an example for the LGBT youth.

I guess that's true, but I still think the priority should be to just destroy this idea that gay people need to have gay role models. You don't hear a straight guy having a straight role model, now I know that obviously it's not that simple, but I do hope that people want to make it happen in the future. Matt's obviously an idealist so I agree that practically his suggestion is stupid right now, but as a model for the future I think it's spot on.

But we're not gonna get to that future without some proper s-xual education for the smallest of our next generations first. It'd be nice to see people not caring so much if someone was gay or not because in the acting world it's just sickening :air: Nearly every actor has a gay rumor connected to him at one point.

That's such a clickbait-y title, especially since the last paragraph of the article is Matt saying he's NOT saying gays should stay in the closet.
