Didymus 34,380 Posted September 16, 2015 Share Posted September 16, 2015 Things like this do nothing but strengthen anti-U.S./anti-Western ideologies, even in people like me I don't even care if I'm called out for sympathizing with ISIS etc. (which happened more than I could count simply because I recognized that there are more than a few reasons to despise the, of course, illusionary idea of "the West") because it's just true that there is a serious problem deeply embedded in our culture with xenophobia that's directly linked to strategies of Muslim terrorist groups (prime example being ISIS and their beheading video's of course) use to get what they want, and it's of course utilized by Western governments to get what they want. Point being: I hate it when Westerners show off their dumbass colors because it can result in serious, difficult-to-break paradigms that could easily turn this innocent kid into a supporter of ISIS, since his experience is manipulated by recruiters as a fertile and emotional basis for anti-Western sentiments that can turn into physical violence in a heartbeat. Even on this forum, though it wasn't thàt serious in those cases. I just remember Simon (ironically, since he is now using illusory ideas like "the West" to support his own views) and garnite accusing me of blaming everything on "the Western world" and seeing ISIS as an innocent victim of Western criminality in the Middle East. Which I do not, but apparently offering context equals support for the imagined enemy. But it's also often brought up during verbal discussions with friends and family members who just can't believe they're hearing someone say anything else than "They're monsters and they need to be killed asap". People know me as someone who pretty much despises the "Western lifestyle" and who often "defends" (what I really do is, again, offer context like for example the latest research about free will and neurobiological implications in an area like crime) famous local criminals, rapists,... by referring to basic facts of science (which I thought every Westerner subscribed to) so too many people just think that I automatically defend a wrongdoer because I feel bad that he's ganged up on by society, incl. They should have simply called in the bomb squad to look at it real quick and decide if it was dangerous or not. If it was wired the same way as a common homemade bomb, they simply ask this kid to refrain from bringing anymore of these projects to school. It's not like they can't turn his name in to government agencies and look into his activities on the computer. They are going to know if he was starting to delve into something that is potentially dangerous on down the road, or not. "Having the skill and ambition to build something cool should lead to applause, not arrest. The future belongs to people like Ahmed," Zuckerberg wrote on his personal Facebook page shortly after 1:30PM. "Ahmed, if you ever want to come by Facebook, I'd love to meet you." President Barack Obama this morning invited Mohamed to the White House in a tweet, while Hilary Clinton tweeted support for Mohamed while implicitly saying the boy's arrest was a product of Islamophobia. Mohamed's arrest at MacArthur High School resulted in an outpouring of both sympathy for Mohamed and outrage at the local police and school district. The story is now taking a new, viral shape today — one day after Mohamed's arrest — as more people around the country rally in support for the ninth grader with a love of robotics. Mohamed was released after being handcuffed and led out of school, whereupon he was interrogated by five police officers without his parents and asked why he was trying to make a bomb. ... I would be nervous too if I see anyone bringing this stuff to school. Let's hope he don't get brainwashed by ISIS through the internet like other young people did.
