I'm sorry for the name calling. That was wrong and immature, I just got carried away.

That being said, you're wrong. People of a race or creed don't own anything and at the very least they should be flattered. What we need is to tear walls down, not build fences and tell people "You can't do that, you're white!"

I'm not going to respond to this argument anymore, though. I don't want to hijack this thread talking about a non-issue. Peace, friend.

In an ideal world, the intermingling of cultures would be uninhibited and fair. idk, I feel like it's just a sad fact that because of years of Eurocentrism and western-centric militarization and colonization, the tier of people being allowed for years to steal culture and not see it as an issue has fallen onto general whiteness.

For the most part, it's not even a manner of any white person doing anything wrong- rather, the perpetuation within cultures of whiteness being a default. As in, it's not necessarily bad to a white person because the issue goes right over their heads, and perpetuated by POC minority cultures who view it similarly.

I understand it's perceived differently per culture, but this is just from my POV coming from a predominantly Southeast Asian/Pacific Islander and Latino culture and community.

then what are you

I'm a human.

I don't define myself by race, gender, or any other stupid difference, I don't restrict myself because of those differences, and I certainly don't pass those restrictions on to other people because I truly believe in equality.

Why would being dark skinned make me right? Why would being light skinned make me wrong? I realize racism is an issue, but you're not going to kill it this way, you're only strengthening it by saying things like "typical white response". You're PART of the problem.

As I said before, I'm not responding to this discussion anymore. Peace, friend.

The VMAs was a hot mess but I'm still glad I watched it because Kanye announcing that he's gonna run for president in 2020 was such an iconic moment.

I also thought that Tori Kelly's performance was the only performance that was good and not just decent. I'll have to check her music out later.

I'm not a woman. I'm not a man. I am something that you'll never understand.

I guess it's just my fault because I like to look past peoples' race/nationality and like when people celebrate cultures, whether they're part of it or not.

Ideally, there's nothing wrong with that. Like I said, in a perfect world, we should be able to see past all that. Unfortunately, with the way society is structured as it is, at least here in the states but most likely in a good deal elsewhere, there is still very much racial and cultural tiers.

People are definitely not just their culture, but they are still their culture, including historical factors and contexts that shape whatever that culture is within the environment they are within.

I see your point, friend, I just subscribe to a different philosophy, I guess. I want to treat everyone fairly, no matter what, even when it upsets people because, honestly, they shouldn't be upset.

Thank you for being respectful and making sense, though  I'd like this post but I've reached my limit...again...

I can see where you're coming from. Somebody mentioned here that Nicki spun the whole ordeal of her initial VMA's controversy around her, and that the argument spinning into the implications of Black women being sidelined just happened to go onto her side.

I don't follow her too much, so I don't have too much knowledge on her actions as an individual- rather, that I agree more on her as a representation of intersectional feminism, and as a justification for the "angry Black woman" stereotype.

On one hand, I don't think there's anything wrong with being an angry Black woman- it's true that people and so much of media paint that as headliners, but imo it's justified. POC, especially Black people have a lot to be angry about.

HOWEVER, I don't know if Nicki feels genuine about these issues, or if she rode it out along her side. Think of it as the other side of Taylor Swift being a feminist, but in the end still relatively blind to a lot of struggles others face even within the sphere of feminism.

That said, I miss Gaga so much.

My problem with Nixki is that she's only an "angry black woman" when its convenient for her. Where was this Nicki when she had long blonde hair and blue eyes screaming over a Redone beat? She's as fake as they come.

It's science, bitch

Glad we can see eye to eye. The philosophy you have is not a bad philosophy at all, just as long as you can at least try to see why people are upset. Within the context of this particular argument, I can see why.

Also, I never knew there was a like limit lol

I can definitely see why people could be upset or offended, I just don't think there's a reason to be, especially when Miley is offending an entire culture by wearing dreads...

If someone were literally mocking a culture, that's not cool at all, but doing something that's inspired by or rooted in a culture, done tastefully, should be totally fine

Yep :emma: used to be 20, then 40, now 50 and I still run out :emma:

I don't really think that Miley is mocking a culture by wearing dreads. It's debatable if its cultural appropriation, but i's not mocking it.

This is mockery:

Because she knew Miley was going to be wearing her artRAVE dreads, club kid clothes, and acting all bizarre. I saw someone on Twitter saying she probably saw the promo shots or her on Jimmey Kimmel and got upset. Gaga did the same thing when Miley posted her crystallized eyebrows the other week. She went onto her Instagram and was saying she's been doing the eyebrows for years now with her makeup artist. Gaga can be petty sometimes. But I don't blame her. She often gets her ideas stolen from others and those artists water them down to something meaningless. Not to mention that she's hardly ever given credit. I can see why she's frustrated.

I know Miley's looks weren't exactly ARTPOP, but the stage and some of the outfits seemed very familiar. Not to mention Miley has said multiple times how she admires Gaga. She doesn't really say that about any of Gaga's other contemporaries.

Someone mentioned how this year's show represented the current climate of the industry; i.e. no one has a clue what is going on. There's a lot of random and meaningless genre hopping in hope that something will spark a new movement, mix of A-list celebs with Vine & Youtube stars, etc.

One went as far to say that there was a creepy undertone to the evening. Like a strange dystopian undercurrent was happening that peaked with Kanye's random speech.

I'm still optimistic that our generation has consequential culture that will be revealed in music, film, and art, though. We just need to demand more of our artists.

I love that I can always count upon Kanye West to make me laugh until I cry, even when I am majorly depressed.

I am feeling old, I do not like Miley and that show was tragic to me. I have also heard her album, in passing, and I do not enjoy her songs or anything about the new album, besides that she gave it to the world for free. I can appreciate her giving it out free. I am not getting all of the Miley hype today.

The future's uncertain and the end is always near.

I've been so out of the loop in terms of celebrities, and even Gaga, so thank you

Interesting way to interpret it. Reading the transcript of Kanye's speech, I really did enjoy it- though, I haven't actually listened to or watched it, so I'm unaware of the tone of it.
