If he feels the need to go the "real manly " route by creating his music the way he does "with bleeding and crying all night" and whatever else, it is his choice, but he shouldn't expect all others to go the same route he chose for himself and then get angry. Artists like Gaga, Marina, Florence, etc. don't fall in that description and they are pop artists. And I agree that other genres have their goods and bads as well but don't say that to sound "different" and "pretentious".
