Sandra Bland, 28, was moving from the Chicago suburb of Naperville to Houston, Texas for a new job when she was stopped by Waller County police for failing to signal. She was arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer. Monday morning, she died in her jail cell. Authorities have called it suicide by hanging, but her friends and family believe she was killed. In Alabama, Kindra Chapman, 18, was arrested for allegedly stealing a cell phone. An hour after she was booked on Tuesday, she was also found dead in her cell, and authorities again attributed it to suicide by hanging, AL.com reports. "I talked to her when she first went to jail," Texas bondsman Joe Booker told the Daily Beast. "I called her mother for her." Bland's bail was set for $5,000, according to the local Waller County Sheriff's Office. Mic reached out to Booker, who was unavailable for comment Friday morning. Bland, who lived in Naperville, Illinois, was in Texas to start a new job at her alma mater, Prairie View A&M University, when she was pulled over by local police in Waller County for failing to signal before changing lanes. At some point, an altercation occurred and an officer arrested Bland. Footage of the incident shows the police holding Bland to the ground as she protests. "You slammed my head into the ground, do you not even care about that?" she says. "I can't even hear." Then on Monday morning, she was dead. In a statement posted to Facebook, the Waller County Sheriff's Office said the cause was "self-inflicted asphyxiation." "Waller County Sheriff's Office July 14 at 12:22pm · OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE On Monday, July 13th, at approximately 09:00 am, a female inmate was found in her cell not breathing from what appears to be self-inflicted asphyxiation. CPR was immediately started and Waller County EMS notified. She was pronounced deceased a short time later. In order to maintain the integrity of the investigation, the Texas Rangers were immediately notified to conduct the death investigation. The Texas Commission on Jail Standards, Texas Attorney General and Waller County District Attorney's Offices were notified. The name of the female is being withheld at this time while investigators speak with family members from another state...." The reported bail attempt was only the latest in the string of suspicious revelations surroundings Bland's death that have led many to doubt the official police version of events. On Thursday, Daily Kos reported that the sheriff of Waller County, Glenn Smith, had been suspended and then fired from his previous job as Hempstead, Texas, police chief in 2008 after allegations of racism from local residents. Bland's family has disputed the suicide claim. Family attorney Cannon Lambert told reporters at a news conference Thursday that relatives thought "she was killed," the Chicago Tribune reports. Bland also maintained a vibrant Facebook page (now apparently locked down) and a Twitter account that mixed a passion for social justice with a litany of smiling photos. Officials say the officer involved has been assigned to "administrative duties" while the investigation continues. "We have identified violations of the department's procedures regarding traffic stops and the department's courtesy policy," the department said in a statement. The department as well as the District Attorney have also requested FBI forensic a--lysis of the arrest video. Following the death of Bland - a Naperville, Ill. native - more than 100 protestors in Hempstead, Texas, marched from the city's jail to the courthouse demanding answers Friday. Texas authorities on Thursday ruled her death in a Texas jail a suicide by hanging. "It's like, questionable, because of the traffic stop, all of this happened, really? It just brings so many questions," said Troinee Broom, a protestor. Investigators claim Bland became combative after police pulled her over for improper lane usage. During the arrest, which was captured on cellphone video, you can hear Bland complaining that police slammed her head to the ground. "You just slammed my head into the ground. Do you not care about that?" Bland said in the video.
