aquaprincess 23
I'm don't think its racist. I thought it was a beautiful setup for the song. Like other people are saying, the thing to complain about if anything is her vocals on the performance. I can't with my country becoming more and more PC. :pukey:
Chromatislaps 34,851
lmao at ppl not knowing what racist means!!!definately not a singer using a culture in his/her performance!!!open a book Her performance seen as stereotypical to asian culture, her performance it's very ignorant in the sens that they used a mix of influences from different asian cultures (japanese, chinese and korean) , which sparks controversy. So it was ignorant of the ones who created the set (art director, etc) , not sure how much Katy had a say in this. I wouldn't say this was racist, but it could be seen as an offence to foreign cultures by some.

Good maybe it'll cause some backlash and Unc will disappear off of Earth *prays to Lord Lucifer* hopefully *does blood ritual* This was not racist however the performance itself was a hot ass mess and home girl needs to get vocal training because them pipes sound like cars doing a sharp turn with the brakes. so much tea here

Alcina Dimitrescu 1,157
My thoughts about Cultural Appropiation are...it's ****ing dumb. In the end, everything will be thrown together, that's how it's meant to be. This. Intention is so important. It's ignorant, but not racist. Exactly. Prometheus 1,494
People don't know what "racism" means. "Racism is the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, esp. so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races." Being ignorant about another culture is not racist. There is a difference.
MahoganySnitch 67
Oh please, I'm not even defending Katy, but the only thing controversial about that performance was the fact that 5 years into her career, an artiste of her calliber still can't put on consistently good performances, vocal wise :sweep: Hollywood has been (mis)appropriating the Geisha culture for a while now, why are people just choosing to get offended now? Lol where were you when Memoirs of a Geisha came out? PLENTY of outrage.
MahoganySnitch 67
I agree It was so offensive. Very disrespectful of her This tbh. Katy, why? I'm sorry, but geisha culture isn't meant to be poked and proded by the west as "oh so cute and edgy and exotic oh my". This idea that we live in a "post-racial" world is absurd. Jeff Kunst 0
on a side note Kotaku is mostly known for reviewing games and posting gaming news, but once in a while they cover big music award events /film award events. It's a gaming blog but they seem to have realized that they get a lot of page-views by creating or covering controversies over buzz topics, in this case cultural appropriation. Poker 3,740
They all should be talking about how she can't sing, not her ignorance. poor girl Kindness rules all.
