hughdancy 282
I find cultural sensitivity in the USA to be quite overblown. You have intentional racism and actions/words that can be misconstrued as racism. Showing up with blackface on halloween pretending to be an ethiopian maid is racism. Dressing up at an awards show in a geisha costume is not, no matter how inaccurate it may be.
Sunny 12,736
 give her a break There's enough actual racism in the world to go after, without having to harass good-hearted, liberal anti-racist artists like Gaga and Katy over this bull**** concept of cultural appropriation. Get your damn priorities straight. This^ is so spill the tea; It's true that there are a lot of racism in the world, but where would the media strike, the most vulnerable, the famous! This can really harm someones career I like dancin', and ponies....
Vernier 3,786
They really always have. Look at the controversies over Victorias Secret. That's the only situation I can remember and I think that was more because of the "s-xualization" of the Geisha('s-xy little Geisha') given their history rather than just because she was dressed as one. I've yet to see controversy over someone just dressed like one without any sort of addition. Frankly my dear, I don't give a damn
Didymus 34,380
Jesus.. No one would be able to wear/say/do anything if we'd think like that.
Knife 6,898
Asian people are constantly reduced to stereotypes in entertainment (geisha, kimono, fans, samurai, martial arts). What relation does Katy Perry have to Japanese culture? What was the relevance to the song? It's not a good look for anyone to trivialize cultures they have no relation to for costumed entertainment. You just end up looking stupid and ignorant.
Smooth Criminal 2
INB4 Katy becomes the new controversy Queen and hogs all the spotlight from Gaga.
RAMROD 110,236
LOL she clearly doing this wrong. Chinese and Japanese never like each other because of grudge during so many years of wars in ancient time. Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li almost got her acting career ended in their own homeland for acting as Japanese in Memoir Of Geisha where they are heavily antagonized for it by people in their homeland, Mainland China. It is very sensitive issues for most Mainlanders. Katy should have know some history before doing this thing and make it seems it is all in the name of performance. craig 680
So what if she mixes Japanese and Chinese? I'm sure Asian people mix together borrowing from US and other white countries.Same as other combining Greek and Roman mythology. Or elements of JFK-Marilyn Clinton-Lewinsky and Obama-Gaga. Mary Pain 0
Oh please, I'm not even defending Katy, but the only thing controversial about that performance was the fact that 5 years into her career, an artiste of her calliber still can't put on consistently good performances, vocal wise :sweep: I would have preferred that she had shown a REAL geisha, but instead she channeled a shÃ…gi (look it up and you'll see what i mean) :reductive: I agree with you PurplePatch, after 5 years this girl could have gotten better in the vocal department
BuzzcutSeason 3,307
it wasn't i would mark it as bad live but its a theme the ideas were great and weren't racist, katy's singing was the problem in my book and idk why its "Racist"
craig 680
Katy wanted to create an romantic, exotic, beautiful, out of the ordinary setting for her "unconditional love" song. Telling her she must use medieval Europe (say) instead of Asia because she is white, seems anti-multicultural.
