craig 680
That's funny since 4 sold more WW than ARTPOP4 album sales ahead by 700k in US but only 600k worldwide, so Gaga ahead outside US. And ARTPOP came out when sales were lower but streaming was yet to be included in album totals. The world was wanting to backlash Gaga in 2013 regardless of music, but 4 suffered lack of good singles. (especially a lousy lead single).
User 352
It hurts me everytime when is see how DWYW did well without everything - it was such an good song and with an another r'n'b singer + good video + right presentation it would have made so good.It would have been even more successful than Applause, im sure.I hope DWS will make some r'n'b stuff with Gaga in future, he has much talent for smooth numbers. Fiona Apple 13,006
ARTPOP is way more successful lolYour Applause and DWUW numbers are wrong. If you add the numbers we have for Applause you get 3.9M. So it has sold over 4M.If you add numbers we have for DWUW you get 2.1MI agree with that
benn90 0
Over here in the UK I think 4 was more successful. people had a greater awareness of the new album as it was released days after her amazing performance at Glastonbury. And then she had some great performances in between that and the VMAs. The pregnancy set the album back in terms of promotion. Despite being a low key performing era for Bey, I think what she did manage to do for the album during the era (festivals, glasto, audience with Beyoncé special and roseland residency) where much better received than anything Gaga did during the ARTPOP era. So I have to say
Guest
Single-wise, Applause alone beats 4. I think 4 as an album, overall, was more successful than ARTPOP.

Versace 7,959
MTN and You&I not being big , I get it, they are complex songs that the Gp would not fully appreciateBut DWUW&G.U.Y sound like big massive hits, if they came out after TFM no doubt they would be number 1 if not top 5 heck Judas and Alejandro have performed better in certain aspects. I honestly don't get it anymore.

Fame Romance 10,517
I think they're in the same level, since 4 sold more than ARTPOP and in a lesser time, but ARTPOP's singles sold more and two of them went top 10. When it comes to quality, Love On Top>>>>>The whole ARTPOP (just except for Applause and DWUW)

androiduser 7,438
I would say 4 went more unnoticed, because Artopop was publicized as a bigger flop, but overall I'd say 4 was more successful
StrawberryBlond 14,824
ARTPOP. It had more successful singles, both charts-wise and sales-wise. The public remember the album and its singles better than 4's. I saw Applause and DWUW featured in quite a few music reviewers Best Singles of the Year lists whereas 4's songs didn't get a look in back in 2011. Beyonce didn't have one top 10 single in the US with 4 which is unheard of for her. It doesn't matter if Beyonce won more awards for her album - awards are a matter of a committee's opinion and it's mostly all fixed anyway. What ultimately defines AP as the winner for me is that there was a tour for it. Nowadays, if you can do an arena tour with an album, it can't be that bad of a flop. We've seen popstars cancel or outright skip tours with albums that had AP's sales. If 4 sold even better, why didn't Beyonce tour? There was no reason why she couldn't do it post-pregnancy (she was working right through it and she sure snapped back into her old body fast). But no, she had to put songs from 4 into a greatest hits tour announced out the blue over 2 years later in order to pull in touring money. If it was advertised as the 4 tour I guarantee it wouldn't have sold as well.We have to remember too that sales are always relative. It depends how well album sales were when each album was released. 4 was released in 2011, when album sales were good. Back then, her 310k debut was seen as embarrassingly low and her overall sales weren't much to write home about, especially for a Beyonce album. Gaga was releasing BTW at the same time and was debuting with a million and selling 6 million worldwide. That's how good albums were doing back then, so 4 flopped for its time. But AP was released in 2013 when albums sales were (and still are) in the pits. No one was pulling out amazing debut weeks, so her 258k debut was really good. Plenty of albums who had bigger hits preceding them didn't debut as high. She sold 2.5 million in a horrible time for album sales which was amazing and it was one of the best worldwide sellers of the year. For its time, it sold moderately. This is how you have to look it. Sales mean nothing without context.http://gagadaily.com/uploads/monthly_2015_03/gaycat.png.992b47d38f09b0ad096f1acf4618aa13.pngARTPOP because people are still talking about it 2 years on That's exactly it. Something can't be that big of a flop if people still recall it. Honestly, it feels like the 4 era has been permanently erased from the public's minds. Not even the Mrs Carter Tour could bring them to show a new-found love for it. But everyone seems to remember how amazingly Gaga flopped with AP. And a lot of people definitely liked Applause and DWUW. By the sounds of it, there was some GP love for MANiCURE and Gypsy when they were presented with them. But there just seems to be no public recollection of the 4 era except for what a terrible single Run The World was.
ALX 170
obvi ARTPOP based on chart positionsif Bey hadn't lead into 4 with the **** known as Run the World then it would've been drastically different
VforVendetta 2,024
It must be noted that 4 was released in the middle 2011 while ARTPOP in the end of 2013. The album sales are falling by a big % every year and there is a fall in single sales as well. Also Gaga god much more negative press during the Era while Beyonce sold well the birth of her child in the media.
