garnite 8
Atheists can be just as extreme as theists. Atheism and theism are ideas. Neither one is extreme by itself. thought we covered this... atheism isn't an idea. lack of ideas aren't ideas.
uo111 5,282
thought we covered this... atheism isn't an idea. lack of ideas aren't ideas. garnite 8
Okay Atheism is a lack of an idea and theism is an idea. Neither one is extreme by itself. The semantics are too much they're necessary if you want to speak honestly about this! neither one may be extreme by itself, but there are arguments to be made for going from believing you'll survive your death to doing immoral things in the name of that belief. There are non-religious ways to manipulate people too. If someone is good at it, and wants to do it, they will manipulate people into horrendous things. I don't think that really matters. Either way is bad.

Bebe 17,289
A theist can be all those things too. You are making the claim that they are over zealously following some book, but that's not always true. They often (like every single day) break the laws of the book. So what do you call those people? They can't be extremist Muslims because they don't actually follow the book. They might pretend to follow the book, but they don't. In fact, a lot of people say the same thing, "oh those guys aren't real Christians." I'd rather understand that words have multiple meanings and connotations and the word atheist is no exception. Lest we start calling extremist Muslims a different word because they aren't technically Muslim. No, I'm not really making a claim like that at all. I think I have tried to make it very clear that it is a religious extremists interpretation of their religion which is extreme, whether it is the correct interpretation is irrelevant. So they don't follow every rule of the book, they may interpret some rules as unnecessary or outdated and some rules as modern and important. It doesn't stop the fact that religious extremists act from a religiously held conviction, whether their ideology is misguided doesn't stop the fact that it is entwined with religious belief. You are applying connotations and meanings to the word atheist that don't exist and only confuse what the meaning of "atheist" is. Your beliefs. or lack of beliefs, are determined by your atheism. If you don't believe in God then simple you are an atheist, your attitudes towards religion are something atheism doesn't cover. We can call muslim extremists "extreme muslims" because they identify as Islamic and carry out their extremism in the name of the muslim God. It is their interpretation of the Koran or of their religion (whether wrong or right) that is the motivation behind their extremism. Lets imagine three atheists: An atheist who wishes religion was true, an atheist that doesn't think much about religion and an atheist who dislikes religion. All these three atheists are just as atheist as each other, there is no differing degree of atheism. The third one is anti-theist and has different attitudes towards religion than the other two. So now lets imagine an extreme anti-theist. We know they are extreme anti-theist because they identify as anti-theist and they carry out their extremism towards religious people with anti-religious motivations. That's what this man is, he can't be an extreme atheist because atheism is not an ideology or a belief system.
MahoganySnitch 67
The parents have stated that they have had run-ins with him before in which he was hateful and flaunting his gun. It's not a farfetched idea and it's silly to think it might be a hate crime. No one said atheism "caused" it though. I've seen this too, actually. I'm not entirely convinced the victims' religion did not play any part whatsoever in his reasoning.

2007 5,291
They should lock that terrorist for good, No American news has covered this incident as if street dogs got killed, but if it was the other way around **** would break loose In the whole region and UN would get involved (as it always did)
Whispering 18,865
They should lock that terrorist for good, No American news has covered this incident as if street dogs got killed, but if it was the other way around **** would break loose In the whole region and UN would get involved (as it always did) It's all over the news in the US. I wish people would stop saying it isn't on the news, because that is an outright lie. CNN is running a lengthy segment every hour and have had interviews with friends, family and with legal experts. Anderson Cooper interviewed the sister of the male victim tonight. There was a candlelight ceremony in Chapel Hill tonight where thousands showed up to pay their respects. The story was on my local news, on National nightly news and all over home pages and news media sites. I've also seen it all over social media. Check #ChapelHillShooting. Also, #MuslimLivesMatter. Goosey 3,017
Really sad, and why the fck doesn't more news cover this?!! IS THIS BEING COVERED AT ALL??? Yet media reports refrain from calling this guy a thug, if they even report about this at all. Um, I'm 4000 km away in Canada and I've heard all about it I think it's safe to say they're covering it. I see a ton of comments like these. Y'all expected Charlie Hebdo media coverage or something? Well, this is just a fairly run-of-the-mill triple homicide in North Carolina. You simply won't get Charlie levels of media attention. "I am the world's greatest person that does not want to let people into the country."—US President Donald J. Ayo 300
i dont think its about parking space, how can somebody kill 3 over a parking space! This reminds me of the incident in new york where a woman pushed a man on the subway rails for having brown skin and said while doing so "you were responsible for 9/11" Sad... Nemo 4,410
i dont think its about parking space, how can somebody kill 3 over a parking space!I know it sounds trivial, but it's exactly the kind of thing people can get intensely worked up about. Especially if they live in a place like that -- an HOA-controlled townhouse development, where they've designed for about 1.5 spaces per house, while there are about 2.5 cars. The HOA handing down ever-changing arbitrary policies to try to deal with the problem (or not -- I don't know in this case, but that's how it was for me). Believe me, I don't want to sound flip, but it's very easy for me to imagine someone getting murderous in that situation.

I agree. On the other hand maybe it's because you can see their religion. (well only goes to the girls) But idk. I think especially hatred against Islam plays a role
