Pres. Obama Goes Rogue: Offers Legal Status to Millions of Immigrants

Ugh. Compassion dude, compassion.

In 2003 the Supreme Court ruled in Lawrence vs. Texas that sodomy was not a crime, before that ruling states like Texas arrested gay men who engaged in consensual a--l or oral s-x. If you were a man having s-x with another man in the state of Texas you were violating state law. Sexually active gay men were criminals who faced fines and even jail time. I'm sure there were heteros-xuals in the state of Texas who read about the arrests of gay men in their local news paper and thought…"they shouldn't have had s-x illegally then  they are criminals

It's absolutely ok to disapprove of Obama's decision, but to shrug off the dismantling of millions of immigrant families over a law is so  gross and heartless. Put yourself in the shoes of a child of an illegal immigrant, and imagine how they are feeling today.

Compassion.

All of this!

Whispering

I basically came into this thread anticipating that he would be the lone voice of dissent. Utterly predictable.

It's like we have our own mini-Rush Limbaugh at GGD.   :haha:

As the son of an illegal immigrant, and out of pure spite towards them, I find this whole thing stupid and useless.

Deport them, please.

I lived in Texas my whole life, I've seen both sides of illegal arguments between children being torn from families to increased criminal activity due illegals. I've just grown to the point where I would prefer no sort of amnesty or attempt to *** foot their way around the issue. I have 0 compassion towards families who knowingly put themselves in that situation by being desperately stupid without thinking ahead, like dumping their children here and getting themselves deported and acting like its some kind of sob story.

I understand what you mean in a way about the kids who are born here from illegal parents. They get deported and it's not their fault or the government's fault. It's the parent's fault. I think if an adult knows the risks of being illegally in a country, they shouldn't have children.

I understand they come from even worse conditions. My dad and my step dad, from Colombia and El Salvador respectively, have both been victims of turmoil, civil war, poverty, and perpetual unrest, and i always found their stories fascinating. However, without a proper legal means of pushing yourself and your family into a country, you either open up a whole set of problems or make matters even worse.

Thankfully, Obama added to his proposal a lot of very good stipulations, but its a double edged sword.

A lot of illegals do not trust anything, for fear of being ratted out and deported. A good portion of them won't come forward for a while till actual word of mouth spread that the program is real. So a lot of people will view the plan as a slow starting failure from the get go.

The other issue is proper documentation, and proving a lot of the requirements needed to go for the temp. legal status. A lot of their information is either falsified, obtained through others of legal standing, or illegal obtained.

Its going to be a lot of interesting stuff going forward, to say the least. Sadly, I prefer an Occam's Razor approach to things.

Interestingly enough, the people against allowing immigrants (who seem to come to this country looking to better their lives and the lives of their families) are also the same people who preach about "family values" and doing the "right" thing. They want people like them to be favored and catered to, but heaven forbid someone who's different from them have something that is tremendously difficult be made a little easier.

Yeah, I've noticed this. It's the "Us" vs. "Them" worldview that's clearly present in things like this. As long as our family values are upheld, everything is fine. But not theirs.

I've also noticed this on the issue of abortion. Most conservatives are pro-life and say human lives are important yet don't want to provide poor people with services to live better lives.

They also tend to be pro-death penalty even though there's no proof that the death penalty deters criminals from committing crimes and giving someone the death penalty is extremely more expensive than just putting them in prison.

But, y'know. All life is important.

Wait...

It seems they are under the assumption that giving less privileged people rights somehow infringes on their own. They're confusing lack of privilege with lack of rights.
