West Australian: "Taylor Swift's 1989, the closest thing to Thriller in years"

Bye, far from it. Each song on Thriller is an unique masterpiece, carefully crafted out of 900 demos by MJ and Bruce Swedien Quincy Jones. Its impact and legacy are bigger than Taylor Swift will ever bring out. They are deluded to even make this comparison. :smh:

It is referring to the album. No, every artist does not "have a Thriller"- not an album or a song of that nature.

------------------------------------------

Of the album's nine tracks, seven singles were released from the album, all of which reached the top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100. In just over a year, Thriller becameâ€â€and currently remainsâ€â€the best-selling album of all time, with sales of 65 million copies worldwide. In the United States, it also tied with the Eagles' Their Greatest Hits (1971–1975) as the best-selling album at 29 million units shipped. The album won a record-breaking eight Grammy Awards in 1984, including for Album of the Year.

Thriller enabled Jackson to break down racial barriers in pop music via his appearances on MTV and meeting with President of the United States Ronald Reagan at the White House. The album was one of the first to use music videos as successful promotional toolsâ€â€the videos for "Thriller", "Billie Jean", and "Beat It" all received regular rotation on MTV. In 2001, a special edition issue of the album was released, which contains additional audio interviews, demo recordings and the song "Someone in the Dark", which was a Grammy-winning track from the E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial storybook. In 2008, the album was reissued again as Thriller 25, containing re-mixes that feature contemporary artists, a previously unreleased song, and a DVD, which features the short films from the album and the Motown 25 performance of "Billie Jean".

Thriller was listed by the National Association of Recording Merchandisers at number three in its "Definitive 200" albums of all time. The Thriller album was included in the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry of culturally significant recordings, and the Thriller video was included in the National Film Preservation Board's National Film Registry of "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant films".

------------------------------------------------

These facts alone begin to explain why this comparison is not only ridiculous, but downright laughable at this point!

As soon as this Taylor girl falls from grace, no one will say a single positive thing about her no more. That`s how pop culture works. Those who are succesful are always right.

It's hard to light a candle, easy to curse the dark instead.

I'm absolutely disgusted right now. If 1989 is the closest thing to Thriller then they can say that my unreleased debut is the closest thing to The Dark Side of the Moon.

Whispering

This is the most overrated piece of crap fangirling article in years....Taylor Swift's new album is not the closest thing to Thriller in years. It's had one big hit so far and maybe 800k in sales and now it's Thriller?

Thriller's Stats:

CONSERVATIVE ESTIMATES: 65 Million Copies

WW ESTIMATES: Around 110 Million Copies

First year stats: 35 million copies

And for the record the ONLY artists that have come out since the year 2000 to sell over 20 million copies of an album are:

Norah Jones, Eminem, Linkin Park, Adele, and Lady Gaga

The only artists that have debuted in the past TWO DECADES to sell over 30 million copies WW are:

Adele, Lady Gaga, Allanis Morrisette, and Nirvana

This business of an album selling (potentially) 1 million copies in a week is horse **** compared to what some artists have accomplished.

Remember, at Taylor's best, her numbers are only half at Gaga's best.

Thank you. Bye.

RECEIPTS:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_albums

In the US alone, already on track for 1.2+ million.

Gaga has not sold 20 million copies of any one of her albums.

Taylor has sold 30 million albums worldwide and Forbes estimates she's earned $252 million since June 1 of 2008.

Taylor is not at half of what Gaga has sold, not in the US and not WW.

I agree with you that 1989 is in no way another Thriller, but many of your numbers are incorrect.

erm....The Fame has sold over 30 million WW.

It has sold like 17 million in the US since 2008.

Gaga has earned tons of more money than Taylor....not that that matters in music quality. I mean Jessica Fugging Simpson is worth over a billion.

But anyway....30 million over a 6 year career is not thaaaaat impressive...and this is like her fifth album. They are strong numbers....but not slaying numbers.

I'd also like a receipt for this 1.2 million number you are making up because I read the other day that her day 2 sales dropped to like 100k and she is still only in the 800s as of today. She is flirting with 1 million but not there yet.

At the end of the day Gaga has sold 55 million albums in just three LPs and 1EP. (Her average is 15.6 million WW per album)

Taylor has only sold 30 million in five LPs. (Taylor's career average per album is 6 million WW)

At this point, Gaga could literally have FIVE more flop albums sell like ARTPOP and her average would still be higher than Taylors right now to put that into perspective for you.

MATH:

55million (current) + 5X3mill(ARTPOP sales)=70million

3.5 albums (current) + 5 more flops= 8.5

So 70mill divided by 8.5= 8.2 million average per album
