[in the US] Android models made up for 61.8% of sales. Despite Apple's overall share declining slightly during the quarter compared with the same period last year, the survey found that demand for the new iPhone 6 models was very healthy.

Kantar found U.S. market competition has been reinvigorated with both LG and Motorola increasing their shares. The recently launched LG G3 and Motorola Moto X are better positioned to compete with flagship products from Samsung (SSNLF) and HTC.

In Europe, Android continued its dominance with a 73.9% share of the smartphone market. Apple was second highest share with 15.4%, while Windows registered in third with 9.2% of the market. Kantar's "big 5" European markets include the U.K., Germany, France, Italy and Spain. Across those five markets initial sales of the new iPhone models have overwhelmingly been from existing iPhone owners (87%). Kantar adds the iPhone 6 has outsold the larger iPhone 6 Plus by five-to-one margin in the major European markets.

In Great Britain, where the new iPhone models started shipping toward the end of the survey period (Sept. 19th), Apple saw its sales share up by 1.7% compared with the same period last year, taking iOS's overall share to 31% in that market.

In China, the world's largest smartphone market, Android phones registered a whopping 83.4% market share, The survey found that local brand Xiaomi continues to dominate. Its Xiaomi Red Rice 1S and Xiaomi Rice Note models were the two top selling smartphones over the past three months fueling it to a 30.3% market share, followed by Samsung (18.4%). iOS phones garnered a 15.2% market share in the quarter.

I find the China market share of over 83% very astounding, considering it's the world's largest smartphone market. That makes Android the most popular OS not only in the world's two largest markets (China & US), but the entire world as well. And look at Japan, iOS took a massive tumble of almost 16% in the last year :ghostney:

Also, for those who I know will make the same tired claim that iOS has only one option and Android has many: this is about OS market share not individual phones.

Furthermore, the iPhone has a variety of options as well, including the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6+ but also older variants like the 5S and 5C and even older options that are still available to purchase.

So in actuality the iPhone also has many different options as well. Yet these options and choices are all basically the same: the same phone, the same basic look, just maybe a different color, or (now) screen size.

Android, on the other hand, offers meaningful variety and options, with different manufacturers making different UIs that differentiate them from other Android competitors, but all still using the same thing OS its core: Android. So the better thing to note and pay attention is the philosophy behind Android: open platform and variety. Android is more open, allows for more innovation as a result such that makers can create new designs and features, thus providing for more variety for its customers and allowing you to choose which you want rather than have it be chosen for you.

First of all, these numbers are from the quarter right before the iPhone 6 was announced. No one was buying them because EVERYONE knew a new iPhone was on the way and the current ones would be discounted.

Secondly, Android phones have such a large marketshare (especially in China) because they're CHEAP. And don't try giving me the "they offer a free iPhone model" excuse. I'm talking about off contract, the way most people in countries like China pay for their phones. The iPhone continually outsells its main competitors, and it is the world's best selling smartphone, even though it's the most expensive, sometimes by hundreds of dollars in certain countries.

Lastly, to say that the variety of iPhones is the same as the variety of Android phones is plane idiotic. There is only one company that makes iPhones and they have the same basic physical design and the exact same OS design. If someone doesn't like the iPhone, they don't like the iPhone. If someone doesn't like a Galaxy S5, there are plenty other Android phones with different design and different features. And please don't try saying colors and storage capacity count as "variety" or I might vomit.

Just wait until this quarter's numbers before you attempt to "drag" Apple, because they will be astounding.

I know right. Same here. Also, I don't get what the big deal is about Androids. I like the minimalism of an iPhone way better than an Android phone like a Galaxy. It just makes my head hurt when all these people say they prefer Android more than iOS when they can't even give a straight answer as to why. I just am waiting for when Androids will be completely dissolved in its own dullness

After trying the Nexus 5 and now having an iPhone 6.. I like both. I LOVE the screen and battery life on my iPhone 6. But, I do miss some small things like the temperature outside being at the top of the screen where the time is. I love the iOS apps and games a lot more than the android ones. They're higher quality and have more games that I enjoy.

It depends more on the phone than the OS operating system anyway. And, the iPhone is affordable on contract. I only pay $60 a month for a single line 2 year contract with Verizon.
