$4.67 Big Mac can pay for $15/hour workers?

I don't think you guys should judge food service/ retail workers. They do need to take care of their families somehow. I suggest raising it to $10-12/h. And, just because they have those jobs doesn't mean they lack intelligence or drive. Many are stellar at their jobs and give their best everyday.

I know multiple people whom are geniuses whom work these jobs because they cannot afford to go to school. One of my friends works at Costco whom should honestly be doing an MD/PhD, but she left school because her mother used her loan money and messed up her credit. My significant other works in a restaurant 9 hours/day and he's amazing at physics/ mathematics/ engineering/ etc., but can't go to school because he works paycheck to paycheck just to survive. I know one girl whom is only working at McDonald's because she's trying to take care of her disabled brother and it's very difficult for her to go to school.

Some of these workers have amazing stories and you seriously just have to listen to them to know them. They're people, too.

i agree to an extent

But jobs requiring different skill levels should have a gap. Businesses are not going to pay a person more than they are worth just because they are tight

And thats a decent level for minimum wage. Minimum wage in my Province and in many Canadian Provinces is around $11/h which combined with the federal checks u get if u make under $35,000 u can survive

Also if u have kids u get a sort of allowence so to speak unless u make over $80,000 a year so its not like u cant take care of urself on minimum wage full time. Ull just be tight

teachers get payed almost $60,000 a year, get 2 months off plus benefits and early retirement

Sounds like a luxury job to me

That's in New York, for teachers with advanced degrees and many years of service.

Other states start out much lower than the starting salary in New York.

According to industry website Teacher Portal, the average starting salary for teachers was $33,950 as of 2011.

Not to mention that teachers usually have to do workshops and other responsibilities over the summer, continued education so they can teach more grades, and more. The salary of the average teacher is realistically more like $45k than $60k. $60k is more like you listed -- advanced degrees and tenure.

what kind of crap? Teachers are an important job and require much education. Why do u pay them so little?

Here in Canada its considered a good job. Above average pay, longer vacations, good benefits plus the bonus of early retirement

Why pay McDonalds employees $15 an hour?! :wtf:

You literally have no idea how much work it is to work there. They definitely deserve the money, also having a job that pays minimum wage or below, you should at least be able to pay your bills.

Early retirement? I don't know of any teachers who are so well off they are getting to retire early. They don't get paid enough for that!

yeah but its low skill. a lot of work or not doesnt change the fact that anyone can do it, doesnt require special education, and its an entry job

I think minimum wage should be higher in the US. its too low. $10/h i think is reasonable... In my Province and in most Canadian PRovinces its around $11/h

But i dont think Mcdonalds work should be above minimum wage. Minimum wage refers to the lowest skilled jobs and mcdonalds is among them

ours do. they get an extra pension (they deduct some of their pay for it and the Government covers a portion of it) and after working as a teacher for 30 years you have access to it (if you turn 65 u also have access to it even if u havent been a teacher for 30 years)

Its up to them to decide if they wanna wait until 65 to retire so they get the teachers pension, old age security ($500/month for everyone who turns over 65) and the regular pension

either way... Besides teachers pension after 30 years, above average pay, longer vacations etc you also get health coverage to cover things the Government doesnt cover such as dental or certain meds (not all health stuff is free in Canada contrary to common belief)

So being a teacher here is a great profession. You dont make as much as a doctor or lawyer... but its definitely one job people go after for a good living

So is a factory worker, but they often times make more than teachers, police and firemen or servicemen. These factory workers don't have to have any kind of special education either or special skills. It doesn't always work that way, high skill-high pay, low skill, low pay.

I agree that the minimum wage should be higher, especially for adults working full-time. Contrary to what people have stated here, fast food restaurants DO need adults to work full time during the week. Teens and college students are not going to be able to work 5 am to 2 pm during the week. These establishments need dependable people to come in and open up the restaurant and serve breakfast. There are usually only a few people at any fast food restaurant that work full time. It wouldn't shut down these franchises to pay these people more.

Some factories prefer to be picky about who they hire and pay them more because they want production.

Dont forget the power of unions also. Many factory workers are under union so they get special benefits. Mcdonalds workers as far as i know arent under any union

Anyway, just because there are low skill jobs that pay more doesnt mean ALL low skill jobs have to pay the same amount.

The minimum wage exists for a reason. Its meant as a baseline for the lowest skilled jobs. If the employeer chooses to pay them more thats great but they dont have to

I agree minimum wage should be a little higher in the US. But mcdonalds will always be a minimum wage job

Honestly ppl talk about not being able to afford college, and their circumstances etc... but theres all kinds of careers u can get into that pay more than minimum wage that u can do with just highschool! u just have to look around. And the economy has improved somewhat, its not as hard to find these jobs as it was in say 2009!

Y'all are so rude... I'm 17 and working at Chikfila but I believe minimum wage should at least be 8.50 fast food workers have to deal with rude customers, and terrible working conditions... And I have to save up for college and such. But 15$ is too much for fast food

In the words of everyone else in this thread you don't have to work there If you don't like it...

Background info I feel passionate about this topic mostly because my mom, who has 5 sons, worked two jobs minimum wage to get us a better life and so far she has my brother first in our family to go into any higher education after hs because he's witnessed how hard she's struggled.. And you know who's paying for that college my mom. And she's laying for my tuition as well. It breaks my heart hearing how all that's people can sit behind their screens and be rude and so snobbish about people who work in fast food. Like ew... I'm just repulsed

Im not saying i dont wanna work there. I merely said the kind of work i do deserves more than fast food. It requires more brains, and its heavy work. If im making $14/h it wouldnt be fair in my eyes for someone working at mcdonalds to be making $15/h

And i agree some people here were rude but i agree with them to an extent...

While nobody should be put down for what they do... Lets face it... Theres different types of jobs that pay different amounts and fast-food is at the bottom of the chain because it requires no major skill or edication.

Im not saying it isnt tough considering u gotta work fast. But many jobs u gotta work under pressure my job included...

It makes sense fast-food would be among the sectors at the bottom of the chain. And it isnt about disrespecting anyone... But its about what the job is worth and a Mcdonalds job just isnt worth much

Id support a mild increase in minimum wage for the US tho. Living in Canada where most Provinces have it around $11/h i think minimum wage in the US is pathetically low. But no more than $10/h to $11/h for fast food!
