DrewStevens 5,249
So you're just gonna ignore the cost of living difference between Mexico and the US right? Obviously the third world is worse off than the first workd and something needs to be done about that two, but it has nothing to do with what minimum wage in the US should be. The cost of living in Mexico and the US is not very different. The minimum wage in the US is not bad, it is just the minimum.
DrewStevens 5,249
$15/hour is asking way too much, but $10/hour is definitely not out of the question. We all look down on retail and fast food workers, but when it comes down to it, they do much more work and put up with more **** than you'd ever imagine. Don't tell them that their work isn't worth at least $10/hour unless you've been in their shoes. There is a gap in the price of living between the two countries. Just because another country is having financial problems doesn't mean that we can't improve the lives of those in our own country The gap in the price of living is not really relevant considering the gap between the minimum wage of both countries. I'm comparing both countries because what people call 'financial problems' in the US is called 'average life' in other countries.
Jenniferella 2,775
I am disgusted by half of the comments in here. I work in fast-food and believe me if I was able to afford to go to a school I would. I wake up at 4/5 am, travel an hour to get to work and work 8-12 hour shifts to save up for school, and because it was the only job I could find. And the work is all physically tiring. It is fast paced and you wouldn't believe the amount of people that get fired for not being able to keep up. Even the owner who came in and was trying to help us couldn't keep up. Not all of us are lazy. Most of the people I work with work 2 or 3 jobs to survive. Just because our parents didn't (or couldn't) set up a trust fund for us doesn't mean we are less deserving. I am not saying that we are at all in comparison to a doctors work or any other work that requires extensive years at a college/university, but we deserve more credit than all you messes of people are giving us. I worked both retail and now fast food, and believe me fast food is four times the amount of work than retail. I say at $12.50 would be a much more reasonable wage. What if someone only had Mcdonalds as an option? You're acting like people are thinking "mm no I'm not gonna go to school and become a lawyer I'll just flip burgers for people all day" People can't just "get an education" It actually costs money. I am working to save up to go to college. And you have no idea the amount of people who actually can't keep up with working in fast food environments, people get fired all the time where I work for not being fast enough, not being able to do the physical work constantly, etc. Not everyone has a parent who is rich that can afford to send them to school, in case you didn't know that. THANK-FUKCING-YOU Disgusted by many members in this thread. I hope their own lives will show them how wrong they are. heavymlover 340
College in the US is extremely expensive. Some people can't simply afford to pay that much money to study. I agree that it's pretty sad that some of you assume that people working at McDonalds don't want to study or that they didn't put enough effort. thefamebitch 834
Let me clarify that I never was demeaning anyone who works/worked at a McDonalds. I worked at one too, so let's not. Here's the thing, study hard in highschool or apply for scholarships if college is too expensive. I'm going to have about 100k in student loan debt. That's called reality. I should have studied harder or did better earlier on to earn a scholarship or something but I didn't. Just because you don't want to take out a loan for college or whatnot doesn't mean you deserve $15 an hour. I used to unload trucks for furniture for $9 hours a day through this entire summer, with one other worker if I was lucky. I am not athletic but it's called biting the bullet for the sake of my paycheck. If you are unhappy with where you are in life, it's nobodies responsibility to pull you up but your own. That might be harsh but that is the complete truth. Don't wanna take out loans or go to an actual university? Try a community college on an online degree to start. You're not going to pay off any type of student loans with $15 an hour for your main source of income either, so it's honestly up to you if that's the issue. The real issue of this seems to be more of the fact that there are unfortunate people who are in need of a bigger income. That's understandable. I understand that, trust me. But it's my responsibility to pull myself up and help myself. That's just how it works. Hope I didn't offend too many, that's just my views.

I hope it is something with a high probability of getting a very good job immediately with a very good possibility of making a lot in the future! You have to understand that some people don't have the luxury of taking four more years to join the workforce. Many people have to start working right after high school to help their families. Some people simply can't postpone getting a job for four years. Their parents or parent can no longer fully support them, so they have to support themselves, or they have to help support siblings or add to their family income. College isn't always a reality. Where did you live when you were working this $9 an hour loading job? How did you pay rent, electricity, water, food, health insurance, car insurance on $9 an hour? Economy 52,951
i agree with all of this.. honestly if u worked in a fast food place you would know how hard it really is to work there.. you have to be fast and most of the time deal with a bunch of bull**** the customers and employees give you. i say they should raise it up to at least 10. $10h is roughly what minimum wage is in most Canadian Provinces. Although most are gonna raise it to around $11/h and its a good level. People make a bit more money but its not so high that it drives businesses away or makes things cost too much Of course business taxes are actually lower in Canada than in the US. Especially for Corporations. So i dont know if US companies can afford minimum wages like that or not.
Travis 543
There's a reason fast food jobs are noted as entry-level jobs. There has to be a hierarchy in the job market to differentiate between skill level. If they raised the minimum wage for whatever you guys are saying, then all the other positions in the job market should be raised, too. While yes, it's unfortunate that you can't make a manageable living off a job at a fast food place, that's the way it should be. You have to work your way up. Why go to school and accumulate all this debt if I can just go to McDonalds and earn an income that will cover all my basic needs? And for people saying that it's not feasible to just go to school or they can't afford it: neither can a lot of the ones going. I don't have a parent paying my tuition, phone bill, internet, car payment/insurance, etc. I pay for it all on my own by making $9.50/hour at a job that I've had for 5 years. Not to mention a majority of my schooling is paid for by grants/scholarships/loans. If there's a will, there's a way.

Highly socialist place and people are given a lot. Their entrepreneurship rates are terrible and so are a lot of productivity rates... 1 in 5 people are on welfare or disability for crying out loud If it wasnt for oil revenue, theyd be screwed! Exactly. Welfare and disability programs are meant as ASSISTANCE, not a way of living. And in the US we see a lot of people abusing these programs way too often. And in the US we see a lot of people abusing these programs way too often. in Europe too. People want entitlements, get comfortable on it, the economy becomes less productive, and on top of that you have to tax the rich to pay for this stuff and your Country becomes less attractive to business I dont mean to sound super Capitalist. Theres a certain balance to be had. A certain degree of social programs is necessairy so that the most disadvantaged people dont starve to death of course But now-a-days people demand more than the ideal system should offer. And Democrats and Liberals around the world give in to be elected and people dont realise they destroy the economy that way And the more the economy deteriorates, the more assistance people want leading to a downward spiral Its been 6 years since the recession officially ended and the economy world-wide continues to stagnate. And Governments around the world still raise taxes on businesses and the rich to pay for more programs they cant afford. Its non-sense
KillerCupcake 3
Omg they are called minimum wage jobs for a reason. THey don't require any damn skill. McDonald's workers should definitely not make $15 per hour.

For instance the trades If ur in a really bad situation and paying for secular education isnt realistic... U should consider some of these options even if its not something you love Not every job that doesnt require a course pays minimum wage! Everyone doesn't deserve $15 an hour just cause SOME have it rough. It's ****ty but sorry that's life. Yes, it does matter. It matters to those who don't have the luxury of putting a full time job off for four years. It matters to those who are women trying to provide for children on their own because their husband left or is a dead beat dad. It matters to the high school graduate who has to find a full time job to help support his family because his mother died or his father lost his job in the economic downturn. In a perfect world, everyone would have four extra years after high school where their parents could provide at least a room, co-sign on a loan and the family didn't need any type of assistance. In a perfect world, husbands don't run off or die and leave their high school educated wife with the total care of a family. The amount of money a student can borrow, without a co-signer is limited. It is more difficult to get a loan to cover tuition and books, if you don't have a parent who has a certain level of income or has been at a job for a certain amount of time. What if your parent has bad credit, due to recently losing a job? They can't co-sign either. It's simply not as feasible for some people as it is for others. It's nice that you have parents or a parent (or a co-signer) that makes getting a big loan an option, but not everyone has that option. You can keep thinking that every 18 year old kid is in the same situation you are in, but that simply isn't the truth.
