Nobody in this thread is "keeping an open mind". And all of the "news" and articles in this thread are completely biased.

You saying this thread is "keeping an open mind" is truly laughable.

 

If you're referring to me as one of the "7 people", I'd like to see receipts. And the fact that most news/articles came from twitter users for the first few days shows how horribly this event has been handled by the police department, who gave no reason for shooting until 6 days after the fact for an apparent robbery, which officer Wilson apparently did not know nor was it mentioned in the released dispatch tapes, and Brown was shot for allegedly blocking a residential road. But I thought it was a robbery? Why all the inconsistencies? Those are the answers I want, which the local community and those observing the events deserve. I'm sure you agree with that.

Also, this wasn't the comment i was referring to. I was referring to the comment about how unfair this thread is when it came to difference of opinion.

That is why i told Taylor to not bother stating his opinion and why I refrain from stating mine. That's why I'll no longer be posting in this thread again.

If what you have can be vetted, then I see no issue posting it. Unless, of course, it can't be and it's false info. But if you feel the way you feel about this thread and don't want to post again, then by all means, do just that. It's in your hands.

I feel as though me posting in favor of the officer would start attacks at my character so i will not. But thank you for allowing me the opportunity.

Allison has a point. To make this thread more balanced, others are more than welcomed to post stories or have views that differ from others. I don't like one bit how you were alienated in this thread, for expressing your views.

Others in this thread need to cool it when others weigh in. I think we can all agree, tragedies like this are never an excuse to loot, damage property of people who had nothing to do with this alleged attack.

I think the peaceful protests of folks saying "Don't shoot," those speaking up for justice and equal treatment no matter race, class, or background, and those who volunteer to aid those hurt or suffering are more powerful messages for change than selfish behavior that only feeds this aggression from the local and state authorities.

When I criticize this action, it only because the circumstances surrounding it and my feelings toward excessive force. I know officers risk their lives everyday. I have a number of very good friends who work in law enforcement or military operations. I don't want this instance to demonize all cops, as some suggest. However, there are times when corruption and abuse happen, but hence why officers (ideally) hold each other accountable through internal affairs.

So going forward, let us listen to all sides of this story and see if we can cross reference the truth as close as possible. The best way to come away from horrible instances like this is to keep communication open to avoid misinterpretations and gain understanding that is balanced and grounded in reason.

White people aren't looting and burning their community.

And aren't the blacks and PC liberals just as predictable in their moves and what they say? It's Groudhog Day on that side too - including the claim the victim was a "good kid" and having it fall apart.

I think the main point of this post was that peaceful reporters were getting tear gas thrown at them.  So why not these people?  I also posted a reporting of police brutality on reporters from the Ferguson police.  I think that's why someone highlighted this.

It may look predictable because structural discrimination is so imbedded, society is accustomed to it and many rely on those social norms for security and that sense of belonging with those that happen to look similar, even though people are pretty much the same people across the board in terms of personality. Each person is unique in genetic makeup despite where they grow up or how they were born. And let us not let the media feed us the "same old cliches" because vice versa does happen.

There is something about cases like these when you hear people say basically "look at us, we're so civil because we don't act like those animals," thus effectively dehumanizing an entire ethnic group once again. There are good apples and bad apples in every tree, but trees do produce apples.

I think very few people have been keeping an open mind, from both sides. 

 

What Brown did before he was shot was disgusting and should have been punished. The fact that the officer put multiple bullets in him (I believe the report said he was shot 6 times...? Just caught a glimpse of the autopsy report on the news it at the gym today) is unprofessional and inexcusable.

 

Brown should be held accountable for the cigars he stole and his assault on the police officer. He also should have been arrested for violence against a police officer.

But death?

Being shot, fatally, while in a non-threatening position is not appropriate. Had the cop shot him while he was being attacked I'd probably be more willing to side with the cop, but Brown was shot and killed while he was unarmed and with his hands in the air. The police officer overreacted and was in the wrong. 

 

I think the people calling this 18 year old thief a "kid" and ignoring his actions are being ignorant, and anyone saying he deserved what he got need to think about what is considered appropriate conduct by our police force.

I've met her in person and she's one of the sweetest girls you'll ever come across.

She's not racist, and she's not being insensitive.

She supports peaceful protesting, but disagrees with the looters taking advantage of the situation.

She thinks Michael Brown's actions before his murder were wrong and criminal (which, they were), and also believes that the officer should be held accountable and punished for the murder if the investigation reveals him to be guilty (which, he should). 

 

There are two sides to this story, and there would be no story if only one side was completely right. We need to acknowledge this. Choosing a side does not mean you have to see everything about the opposition in a negative or "wrong" light.
