My best friend has a brother with Down syndrome and it was not easy for them at all. My friend helped his mum raise his younger brother from a very young age. I would abort if I found out while it was in still in the womb, or I would put it up for adoption if it was actually born. Apparently the couple found out while the twins were in the womb and asked the surrogate to abort, but she refused. Raising special needs kids isn't for everybody and if you take one on you're setting yourself for a lot of hardship. Not to mention the baby had conditions like a heart condition. A lot of medical bills in the future. Maybe they have their own issues and problems and don't need to add more hardship to the family. I don't blame them for not wanting to deal with that. Gonna suck for the twin girl though once she finds out when she's older. Wow.. You would put ur kid up for adoption just because you.dont want this syndrome.. KillerCupcake 3 Posted August 3, 2014 Share Posted August 3, 2014 lol are you all honestly surprised with this? +90% of all pregnancies diagnosed with down syndrome in the US and Europe are terminated also, don't f*cking start calling these people monsters and what not, down syndrome is not something to be taken lightly, it is a serious and untreatable disease which most parents simply don't have time or the financial power to support. even if you have all the money in this world, living with down syndrome is not a life at all and you're not "giving" that baby the freedom of life in any way by choosing not to abort it. This this and this. GGD again with the holier than thou attitude. Calling them monsters because they are unable to care for a special needs kid. A lot of people can't. I mean come on, who wants a baby with Down syndrome. Not me. Raising a kid like that is HARD and you're never gonna have a normal life, and it's costly. Better the kid has a chance out there with someone who will actually raise him well, then to deal with parents who can't nor do not want to raise a special needs child. However, what those Australian parents did is wrong because they could have seen it during the tests the surrogate did during the pregnancy. If giving out their child was already planned before his birth, then it's not as bad as it sounds, but if they decided to abandon him when she gave birth to the twins, ummm that's a terrible thing to do. Besides, the surrogate accepted to have their babies because she wanted money to raise her two children; did she really need another one ? I don't know, I guess there are tons of stuff we don't know about this case... But what you say is absolutely right, it's the fact of abandoning a child that bothers me the most, I guess. They had already stated early on in the pregnancy that they did not want the child. Oh ok, I didn't know that. I guess they thought about the child and how horrible this disease was. I wouldn't want my own child to live with that ! I guess the media made it look like they were monsters and I fell into that trap head first... As someone posted earlier in this thread, 90% of all pregnancies diagnosed with down syndrome in US and Europe are aborted. NOTHING wrong with that. Doesn't mean anyone is heartless. I would too, and most girls I know would as well. Why bring a baby in this world for a life of hardship, when you could just abort a fetus early on in the pregnancy before the baby even feels anything. It's NOT easy raising a child with down syndrome, I know many people with children like that. And to call someone heartless for choosing not to is just..... All you 16 year olds calling them monsters have no idea what it's like to be in that situation. It was the surrogate's choice to have both children instead of aborting them, so of course the Australian parents have no obligations towards that. As for aborting an embryo with down syndrome -- I think it's more humane to do that than to let the child be born into an environment that is not able to meet its needs. That's not "giving the child a CHANCE to live and fight", it's knowingly letting an embryo grow into a diseased child by making a decision that hurts everyone around it. I was going to say it was wrong of them to reject the baby, but reading that they had tried to abort the baby before it was born, but the surrogate rejected does put a new spin on it and makes the parents action a bit more understandable.
