A PAIR OF Australian parents are accused of abandoning their baby born with Down Syndrome to a surrogate.

Australian news outlets have been reporting the story of ‘Gammy’, a baby boy born with a twin sister who did not have Down syndrome.

Australian news outlet 9 News said that a surrogate was reportedly offered $AUS11,700 by a Bangkok-based surrogacy agent to bear a child for an Australian couple.

When one of the twins she became pregnant with through IVF was discovered to have Down syndrome and a congenital heart condition, the parents are alleged to have taken the girl, and left the boy with his surrogate mother.

The mother, Pattaramon Chanbua (21) has two children aged six and three, and in an interview with ABC News in Australia she said she took on the surrogacy due to poverty and a need for money to educate her children.

She said the situation was the adults’ fault and she felt sorry for baby Gammy.

“I chose to have him, not to hurt him,†she said. “I love him like my own.â€

Raising funds

A fundraising site has been set up which has raised almost $AUS96,000, which it says will go towards Gammy’s family.

An organisation called Hands Across the Water is said to be the holding organisation for the funds.

Is it even allowed to just "leave" one of the babies with the surrogate mother when that wasn't part of the plan? :duck:

Wow, that's horrible.

Imagine being the twin sister growing up not knowing that you had a brother, and that he was abandoned by your parents?

lol are you all honestly surprised with this?

+90% of all pregnancies diagnosed with down syndrome in the US and Europe are terminated

also, don't f*cking start calling these people monsters and what not, down syndrome is not something to be taken lightly, it is a serious and untreatable disease which most parents simply don't have time or the financial power to support. even if you have all the money in this world, living with down syndrome is not a life at all and you're not "giving" that baby the freedom of life in any way by choosing not to abort it.

I wouldn't want a kid with Down syndrome either. I would abort if I found out while it was in still in the womb, or I would put it up for adoption if it was actually born. Apparently the couple found out while the twins were in the womb and asked the surrogate to abort, but she refused.

Raising special needs kids isn't for everybody and if you take one on you're setting yourself for a lot of hardship. Not to mention the baby had conditions like a heart condition. A lot of medical bills in the future. Maybe they have their own issues and problems and don't need to add more hardship to the family. I don't blame them for not wanting to deal with that.

Gonna suck for the twin girl though once she finds out when she's older.
