Like clockwork, we’re having the “why didn’t a famous queer icon virtue signal to their own fan base argument” again lol. A woman who performed Born This Way every night for the better part of the past year, mind you. Would it be a nice gesture? Sure. Do I think it’s necessary at this point? No. I’m not even being defensive of her so much as I genuinely don’t understand the weight/fixation that people place on posting something on social media. If you don’t see Gaga as an advocate for and supporter of the LGBTQ+ community unless she posts something on IG, that borders on object impermanence lmao21 points

I stand in the distance I view from afar Should I offer some assistance? Should it matter who you are? We all get hurt by love And we all have our cross to bear But in the name of understanding now Their problems should be shared Confide in me Confide in me I can keep a secret And throw away the key But sometimes to release it Is to set our children free We all get hurt by love And we all have our cross to bear But in the name of understanding now Their problems should be shared Confide in me Confide in me (Confide in me, confide in me, confide in me) Confide in me (Confide in me, confide in me, confide in me) Confide in me (Confide in me, confide in me, confide in me) Stick or twist, the choice is yours Hit or miss, what's mine is yours Stick or twist, the choice is yours Hit or miss, what's mine is yours We all get hurt by love And we all have our cross to bear But in the name of understanding now Our problems should be shared Confide in me Confide in me Confide in me Confide in me (Confide in me, confide in me, confide in me) Confide in me (Confide in me, confide in me) Confide in me12 points

We don't need celebrities to have their 5 seconds of pride fame during pride month, we achieved what we achieved not thanks to their support but despite their support. Gaga is queer, she's celebrating pride all year, every year, every moment of her life, she doesn't need to prove this to anyone. Being disappointed by celebrities is kind of childish.10 points

Within its first week, Lizzo's Bitch sold 2,649 copies and racked up just under 2.7 million on-demand streams, according to music data company Luminate. In its second week, sales dropped to 650 units while streams dipped to just under 900,000. It’s a steep drop from her previous album, 2022’s Special, which debuted with 39,000 copies sold and 69,000 equivalent album units earned, enough for a No. 2 debut on the Billboard 200. “I think the biggest reason is that she never had a core fan base,” one former senior label executive tells RS. She was a very song-driven, radio hits-driven artist who lacked a core fan base and that’s what you need today for career longevity.” Lizzo credited perceived changes in the primary consumption model of music for limiting her audience. “The industry changed so much in the last 3 yrs. streaming replaced radio & I was a radio darling,” Lizzo wrote on Twitter. “That’s how my fans discovered my music.” There was a time when labels paid top dollar to promote a song to radio, all but ensuring exposure which would lead to other sources of revenue, be it album sales, concert tickets, or merchandise. “I speak like a manager, that’s all BS to me,” industry pundit Ray Daniels said of placing the blame on streaming. “If you know that the industry is changing, you should be warning your fans ahead of time. Why are you not telling your fans to request your song on radio? They’re your fans, they’ll do what you ask them to do.” There is the factor that the trust between Lizzo and her fans has been deeply fractured in recent years. In 2023, her former dancers accused her of sexual harassment, creating a hostile work environment, and fat-shaming in a lawsuit that has still yet to be settled. “A big part of her brand was being the underdog and being very self-confident, I am who I am, I support everyone, body positivity,” the former senior label exec said. “And when you’re called to task for the mistreatment of exactly what you held out as being your, ‘brand,’ then fans don’t wanna see you win anymore, and they desert you.” She’s already lost too much goodwill. Settling won’t bring it back. “Musically, I don’t know what she’s been doing,” another veteran music industry executive tells RS. Representatives for Lizzo did not respond to Rolling Stone’s request for comment https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/lizzo-new-album-bitch-charts-industry-1235581224/9 points

Am I the only one disappointed that many gay icons don't share any message for pride this year ? I don't see pride as something superificial, but as a reminder that people are here for us, show support. I feel sad that Gaga and other celebs don't post anything while it's so important especually this year8 points

Again, nowhere did I argue against speaking out, but acting like Lady Gaga posting something for pride will literally save people’s lives from being taken by a transphobe is purely abstract and is totally disproportionate. I still maintain putting pressure where it counts (on political actors to protect LGBTQ+ people) is the clearest strategic route.6 points

I don't want social media posts, i want action and gaga is constantly being charitable in secret6 points

Queer celebrities don't need to do a social media post to mark pride month. The issues the community faces exist outside of June and we need to stop focusing on this idea of funnelling all attention into a 30 day window once a year. I'm only disappointed when queer celebrities are silent when specific issues hit the news cycle/something specifical happens etc. Because thats when being vocal matters.6 points

Great photos! Also, I find it particularly interesting because it's not just her trying to look as young as possible as in many previous photo shoots these past few years. This one's different and much more exciting imo6 points

This masterpiece of a song sounds different on every listen. It’s unlike anything she’s done before and really showcases a deep understanding of sonic texture and arrangement. Only a true student and lover of music could have pulled it off. No other pop girl can even come close to this sound without their face melting. If she could just craft an album around it, she’d really become untouchable in the pop space like Madonna and ROL. Do it for the art, mother. Don’t be afraid of flopping because great art will live on even when you’re no longer here.5 points

Do we need more processing power when they can't be damned to release games for the thing.5 points

Indeed, I don't think she built a fanbase, people liked her songs but didn't really care about her.5 points

I think people lack a lot of nuance as to how big a public safety issue activism has become for someone in Gaga’s position for both sides of the spectrum, Gaga is a public figure and a target and all those associated with her become targets and grouped together. Her parents, her friends, her team even her housekeeper even if they don’t share her views get tarred with them. And I think she’s highly aware of that. I mean as much as we hated him, look at Charlie Kirk he’s not half as famous and got assassinated in front of a large group of people — imagine Gaga being on a podium at a massive Palestine or Trans protest? No thanks. In a world where the biggest social media platforms are run by right wing men and companies, that constantly push out engagement bait and misinformation for the sake of money and algorithms. Plus how susceptible people are to misinformation in the age of AI and engagement bait — a post on social media is also irrelevant. We’ve all seen the comments on posts across all social media that are on pro-LGBTQ+ media. Even things like Pink News that are staunchly pro-LGBTQ+ mesia networks; the first set of comments is always some weird comments filled with misogyny, racism, transphobia, ableism. Because that’s how engagement bait works. Plus people forget, after the legal document leak we KNOW she’s been active behind the scenes for YEARS and not publicly in activism of all kinds. She was considered the biggest push in the repeal of DADT, her foundation redistributed donations of over $6m worldwide of donations and investment money to mental health charities, LGBTQ+ charities and more in the early 2020s, she was the championing public face behind a lot of the WHO stuff during Covid, she’s met with religious leaders over the years, she’s shouted out trans and gay people CONSISTENTLY and as recently as 2025 across award show platforms televised and streamed to millions. — that’s all still activism, people forget Gaga is a pacifist not an anarchist.5 points

Lady Gaga is a conservative Christian woman in a traditional heterosexual relationship and comes from a traditional Italian family she does not celebrate pride month !!!!!!!5 points

This puts an awful lot of weight on a social media post, tbh. I’m not arguing against visibility, but making the stakes of posting “Happy Pride” on IG about death and discrimination feels incredibly disproportionate.5 points

People put far too much weight on a post, I think people are overreacting she’s not been active properly on social media for like years and people forget that. She only starts using it again when she has things to promote; because that’s what social media is now it’s all engagement and ads. So I don’t expect her to post anything at all rarely considering social media is the toilet. Plus she’s a bisexual woman her whole existence is pride, and considering she’s done more for LGBTQ+ people in her whole career than her peers posting about it — I wouldn’t worry.4 points

Nah. Saying Happy Pride in June means **** all tbh. Especially when those same people posting Happy Pride were silent when Brianna Ghey was murdered in the UK for example. Or are staying silent over Ghanan politicians attempt to criminalise identifying as LGBTQ+. Or have said nothing about this recent case in Idaho https://www.advocate.com/news/crime/idaho-assault-hate-crime Or this case https://www.advocate.com/news/crime/myrtle-beach-hate-crime-lgbtq Or this case https://www.advocate.com/news/virginia-trans-student-sues And naturally, there are way more examples of things we need to talk about instead of just posting a rainbow flag on June 1st.4 points

Over the years, I’ve learned to not expect too much from her (or other big celebs) and I don’t support her financially. I’m sure she’s a great person and I love her, but I believe once you’ve reached a certain level of fame, success and money, you automatically become disconnected from reality and you can’t help it. Because it’s all about you and people always want something from you.And I believe she’s right there. That does NOT mean she doesn’t care or anything, but she’s at a place where she won’t do too much and it’s okay. She’s done a lot for us, and it worked. But 2010Ga is kinda dead and I don’t blame her for that. It’s just something you can’t avoid, me thinks. (unless your success isn’t too big obviously.) I don’t mind her not posting about Pride Month cause we know her heart is with us. What disturbs me more is the fact that she didn’t say anything about the Madison Square Garden staff being unapologetically transphobic, or other things like that. Specific things she has some power over.3 points

Agree and disagree, I always think of this video Perhaps irrelevant as audience is different than specific critics but I think critics could and should exist and have an impact but we just have really terrible critics... if Giorgio Moroder became a Pitchfork reviewer I would be like preach king educate us. and all the tabloid stuff is garbage made to make people feel better about their own lives.3 points
