Jack White has said that the idea of writing songs about public breakups “in the Taylor Swift way” is not “interesting at all” to him. The “Seven Nation Army” musician was asked about the use of autobiographical details in his own songwriting when he made reference to Taylor Swift, whose romantic relationships have inspired a raft of songs throughout her career. Swift is widely believed to have written songs about her relationships with exes – including musicians Joe Jonas and Matty Healy, and actor Joe Alwyn. More recently, her songwriting has been informed by her ongoing relationship with her fiancé, NFL player Travis Kelce. “Are any of your songs entirely autobiographical?” White was asked, in a new interview with The Guardian. “Not too much,” The White Stripes frontman replied. “Now it’s become very popular in the Taylor Swift way of pop singers writing about all of their publicly aired break-ups, which I don’t find interesting at all. I think it’s a little bit boring for me to write about myself. “Even if I’ve had a really interesting day, I feel like I’ve already lived that, I don’t need to go through it every time I sing this song,” he continued. “If it’s something really painful, I’m not going to put this important, painful thing that I went through out there for some idiot on the internet to stomp all over.” White explained that he puts “a percentage” of his personal experience into his own songwriting, so he can then “morph it into somebody else’s character”. “I can’t really learn about myself until I put it into somebody else’s shoes,” he added. https://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/news/jack-white-taylor-swift-breakup-songs-b2934565.html16 points

The decaf dance-pop on Harry Styles’ fourth album is just unremarkable. Even songs about the emptiness of pop stardom succumb to tasteful restraint. https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/harry-styles-kiss-all-the-time-disco-occasionally/16 points

Honestly, it’s part of the reason why I love that she tends to tell her stories in a more fantastical way because it prevents the songs from being stuck in a specific moment in time and, even if they are personal, a lot of her songs can be recontextualized because of that.14 points

that's quite interesting to hear, i'd like to see gaga's perspective on this since she's an artist who regularly releases music that's autobiographical about her struggles, relationships, physical pain and trauma despite being a very private person... i wonder what she feels listening/singing Y&I or music from Joanne (or Speechless) in regards to her family... and since she quite boldly proclaimed her love for michael with BOG, how will she feel about it 10 years from now?11 points

I was gonna tell the story of how we got whiplash in front of Gaga's house but I fear Chica is scarred Hell, one of the times we were on that beach was the middle of the night and we could see the TV on in her house Girl needs more privacy hedges I fear. Welcome to the Megarate of CHROMATICA, sixth-year anniversary edition! “This music actually healed me.” That’s the hopeful message Lady Gaga brings with her as she emerges from something of a career detour—having mostly abandoned dance pop in favor of her 2016 album Joanne’s more stripped-back sound and the intimate singer-songwriter fare of 2018’s A Star Is Born. She returns with Chromatica, a concept album about an Oz-like virtual world of colors—produced by BloodPop®, who also worked on Joanne—and it’s a return to form for the disco diva. “I’m making a dance record again,” Gaga tells Apple Music, “and this dance floor, it’s mine, and I earned it.” As with many artists, music is a form of therapy for Gaga, helping her exorcise the demons of past family traumas. But it wasn’t until she could embrace her own struggles—with mental health, addiction and recovery, the trauma of sexual assault—that she felt free enough to start dancing again. “All that stuff that I went through, I don’t have to feel pain about it anymore. It can just be a part of me, and I can keep going.” And that’s the freedom she wants her fans to experience—even if it will be a while before most of them can enjoy the new album in a club setting. “I can’t wait to dance with people to this music,” says Gaga. But until then, she hopes they’ll find a little therapy in the music, like she did. “It turns out if you believe in yourself, sometimes you’re good enough. I would love for people that listen to this record to feel and hear that.” Rules 1) Rate each track from 2 to 10. Decimals are allowed (e.g., 7.5). 2) Give one track an 11 — your favorite song. Ugh, Jack White needs to keep women artists’ names out of his mouth. I’m no Taylor fan, and I love much of Jack’s music, but he’s so pretentious and always has been. He’s been critical of Gaga in the past, saying she’s too theatrical and relies too much on gimmicks, or some such uninformed nonsense, and it pisses me off. I chalk this up to The Patriarchy. People are allowed to make boring art however they want. Maybe Taylor’s music isn’t for him. 👀 But hetero men seem to think everything should be for them.9 points

She grows and the songs become contextualized in different ways. Like, it's rumored that the person she wrote Brown Eyes with/for is the one that assaulted her but she both sang it and used it as an encore song at The Mayhem Ball. I guess now it's a symbol of strength and healing. "Look how far I've come since then"8 points

I’m usually on the side of fighting the Patriarchy but I also hate this new trend of illusory correlation where any criticism of women in pop is quickly summed up to sexism. You might not like Jack White but he has dogged PLENTY of men throughout his career and been pretty heavy on artist like Justin Bieber, Shawn Mendez, and other male pop stars before. if we lambast every single heterosexual man every time they are critical of art then we risk entering the Credibility Trap, where we sabotage our own movements against patriarchy because we are being lazy about our accusations. you don’t have to like the guy but I don’t think this is sexist. He is clocking a very real trend in pop music that even gay and trans people often say about Taylor Swift…7 points

Maybe hot take but he’s kinda ignorant for this. A lot of artists songs are inherently autobiographical. I just hate artists who criticize others art. It puts a really bad taste in my mouth. You can just say “it’s not for me” and leave it at that.7 points

So you concede that his point was “Ballet and opera are dying art forms and I don’t want to be responsible for saving them (which is how I inferred the point about him preferring being in a more lucrative field)?” If so, feel free to apologize for the smug responses you gave to @nATAH and @Bronco. And if we’re talking about extrapolating insidious meaning from something that wasn’t even remotely said, take a look in mirror lmao. People aren’t saying Hollywood should be dirt poor, people are saying it’s classless to punch down.6 points

Gaga’s energy while dancing to her own music is so often incredible to me. I love that she clearly loves what she creates and stands by her work and isn’t afraid to show it. She should be proud of and enjoy herself, as we all should be for ourselves. Over the years, I’ve seen critiques of Gaga’s dancing on here. And I don’t think she gets enough credit for her energy and passion and overall love for dance. And when she’s on her game, she *is* really good at it—both improv and choreo. (My partner, who is both a Swiftie and dances with a group for fun, finds Gaga to be a better dancer than her “Telephone” collaborator, which is surely a take that wouldn’t go over well in most spheres. 😅) I love how geeky and sometimes imperfect her movements are. Just like the music and the fashion, it’s referential and goofy and sexy and strange and relatable and just everything. In any case, I don’t think we’ve seen the full extent of Gaga’s capabilities, either, as I’m not sure she’s been this pain-free since before her hip started to deteriorate. Hopefully, we’ll get to see more of whatever she and Parris can dream up. It’s so exciting to stan a healthy and happy pop diva!!!6 points

tbh all this reaction is funny because most people couldn’t care less about opera or ballet or have never attended to the theater at all I’m not saying they’re right, it’s just that it’s not an insane opinion people have making it to be on the internet the only interesting take from this whole thing is that it confirms there are artists who are not really passionate about art as they must be affectionate towards fame6 points

I agree 100% But these trends of making these social media videos in the most random places, I dont get it. A lot of ppl do it in their car, others in the bathroom. In this case the bathroom with a towel I do not get these trends. There may be some ppl in a situation where they got no where at home (if they have one) that they have to do it in their cars but i think most people are just chasing a weird trend5 points

it's something she's always done throughout her eras born this way was initially black and white with a dash of red but transitioned into pinks, teals and greys the fame monster started out gothic and very monochromatic/b+w but then suddenly telephone was absolutely not that + the tour was very colourful and neon joanne started out baby blue and pink but then the tour was vibrant solid colours chromatica made the big leap from science fiction hot pink gun metal to brutalist metallic concrete (with some sci fi left over) ARTPOP and the fame were pretty consistent though, artrave still retained that party pink optical illusion theme and the fame was... well, the fame it's nothing new for her, her eras tend to evolve5 points
