Because they're sell outs. They only cosplayed as activists when it was easy, when it was a PR spot and good album promo. Now that it comes with the risk of a cost they aren't interested. They don't want to get their hands dirty. Their life doesn't get any worse under Trump, when Renee & Alex were killed nothing in their life changed. They actively benefit under the Trump presidency, they pay less tax and their incomes have never been better. They have zero reason to stick their neck out.18 points

Ding ding ding we have a winner. Not to mention that basically all of the people that would need to hear this message and change their point of view are the last people that would give a **** what a popstar has to say about it and the people who want to hear it from the pop stars are the people who already agree with them.16 points
-
Because they are pop girls and have no power against ICE or trump. Lots of pop girls played their part during elections, where their voices would actually matter. This energy should be placed on the people that can actually make change. Pop girls making statements is just performative at this point.16 points

line up for the dance yeah bring those fancy pants you know there's disco in the air and hairspray everywhere a disco heaven, disco heaven I feel SO sorry for those who don’t get it. An essential track to the unique pop/rock/funk/electro-core of Gaga’s early work and a blueprint for the second half of Mayhem.13 points

When are we gonna realize Gaga and the rest of her peers are, objectively, blatant capitalists? I love her as an artist but the truth is right there. I don't expect nothing from her except for good music nowadays Plus; yes, anything they said and spoke out about in the past was performative. I would change my mind if they actively wanted to change the system that allows them to have the ridiculous amount of wealth they have, but they still have to prove otherwise. Fighting for rights is a working class issue; they've got nothing to fight for as long as their money keeps intact11 points

Support bts is whats needed during normal times. Not when extrajudicial nazi death squads are executing people on the streets.11 points

Absolutely. Celebrities don't need to be out in the streets leading the charge but they have huge platforms that they should use to amplify the right voices. If Gaga hopped on TikTok, X, Insta, or anything else to actively post sources that outline your rights if ICE threatens you or is nearby or while you're protesting that would be incredible. And also so very, very easy to do.9 points

It's not about changing minds. It's about speaking up, showing your stance and fighting. It's about fighting against normalization. I can't believe I need to explain this in a Gaga forum. When you don't speak up, when you don't protest, when you don't show any reaction, it becomes a part of every day life. It becomes normalized. When it happens to you one day and when no f*cking one gives a damn about you, you'll understand what it means. You'll understand how labeling things "performative" was dangerous.8 points

Gaga cares, just in different ways, not "social media" way, we don't know how she supports bts8 points

Silence is not neutral. When injustice, violence, or exclusion happens repeatedly without public reaction, it slides from being shocking into being ordinary. That’s how normalization works: not because people agree, but because they stop responding. Protest, outrage, art, and public statements break that slide. They re-signal that something is not okay, that it deserves attention and resistance. Labeling these acts as “performative” can be dangerous because it shifts the focus from impact to intent. Even if an action begins as symbolic, symbols matter. They shape language, perception, and emotional permission. Once a subject enters everyday conversation songs, TV, celebrity interviews, social media posts it becomes harder to ignore, dismiss, or erase. You only fully understand this when it happens to you. When something harms you, and no one gives a damn. That’s when you realize what silence creates. That’s when you see how abandonment feels. Pop culture has always played a role in breaking that silence. In the 80s and 90s, AIDS was ignored because it was seen as “someone else’s problem.” Governments stayed quiet. Media avoided it. People died while society looked away. What changed things wasn’t silence, it was visibility. Artists, musicians, actors, filmmakers, activists made it impossible to ignore. They put faces and emotions to the crisis. They made caring acceptable. It wasn’t perfect. It wasn’t always elegant. But it worked. Speaking up disrupts normalization. It keeps pain from becoming background noise. It reminds people that what’s happening is real and that it matters. Because when no one speaks, cruelty becomes routine. And once that happens, anyone can be next.7 points

I’m kinda over looking to pop stars to speak on political issues and topics. When will y'all realize that while talented, they are just rich people living in the US… at the end of the day they will post and give a moment of silence then continue milking the public for more in more money from the comfort of their mansions.6 points

I like it but the red had more contrast with the background dancers. It made her look like the queen of the pack, the black makes her blend with everyone6 points

I have to say, it really hurts my heart knowing what’s happening in the USA and not seeing Gaga, Beyoncé etc say anything at all. People are being murdered and having their rights taken away and the least they could do is post on social media and/or make a statement. I think a lot of people are looking to the pop girls because a lot of there work is political and they usually are voices to marginalised people (POC, LGBTQ+) just look at BTW and Cowboy Carter. Now they aren’t saying anything at all and it’s starting to build tension and resentment within fan bases.6 points
-
Also, this is a very american take (wanting pop girls and famous ppl to speak on issues). No offense at all. I expect my politicians (leftist over here) to do things for good. And that's it6 points

In what world is politics not about changing minds? You rolled your eyes at someone insinuating it was performative and then proceed to ask for the performance of opposition. I agree on the issue of normalization, but one of the key ways to avoid normalization has to do with effecting public opinion (ie changing minds), so if Gaga is not culturally in a position to change the minds of people who disagree with her, what is she doing to aid in the preventing the normalization of ICE’s brutality? Also pretty rich (and not totally surprising) that you’ve resorted to personal attacks, but it’s even more ironic given: you’re not from the country where this is happening and ICE raids are happening in the state that I live in and communities I work in. I have friends who are afraid of being apprehended by ICE because of their race. To act like I don’t care about the issue because I question the extent that Gaga’s (or any pop star’s) involvement in this would meaningfully move the needle and because I think pressuring politicians is more important than pressuring pop stars is genuinely ridiculous.6 points

I'm not in the US but at least here I think a big danger is that a lot of crazy right-wing people seem to believe "secretly everyone agrees with me, they're just afraid to say so". So even though it might look performative, I do think it's important for everyone who has a platform to speak out, even if their position seems to be clear. Just to distance themselves from it and to make the voices that are opposing this insanity louder. I don't think it's about changing minds, but about giving the right-wingers a feeling that they aren't the majority and they aren't welcome. And Gaga does seem to have some weirdo MAGA people who follow her...there's an insane amount of AI trash of celebrities out there and a lot of people can't tell what's real.5 points

The last thing I’m gonna say is: I think a great example of how little celeb involvement in modern politics generally moves the needle is how, in spite of Swift’s endorsement coming at the peak of her commercial and cultural powers, it didn’t meaningfully move the needle in the 2024 election. I’m not saying, nor would I say, that she *shouldn’t* have done it, but my main argument (despite some fairly bad faith mischaracterizations) has only ever been that, while it’s a gesture that reflects a morally correct position, it doesn’t effect real world outcomes the way online pop stans think it does.5 points

social justice doesn't feel the same as it did back in the 2010s social media is infested with right wing bots, ai generated false media, propaganda that's poisoning the minds of our older relatives... I actually feel if gaga went to Russia and screamed "arrest me!!" again, it would be far more dangerous idk it feels so much more scarier... even this one guy at work who's from Afghanistan was telling me how he thinks trump has a good mindset and i had to explain to him trump would instantly view him as a dangerous immigrant, no questions asked but he wasn't getting my point...5 points

I rather them speak with money instead a post in social media, there's a lot of them already. I don't need a star talking about this without opening their bank account to help. Words doesn't matter anymore.4 points

Maybe it’s just my age, but I believe absolutely nothing celebrities can do in 2026 will make a difference unless they’re actively donating to people and orgs that combat ICE. That’s just a fact. People say it “brings awareness” but awareness doesn’t matter now because people are hyper aware, it’s on the news, it’s on social media, it’s in conversations with your family or a person you know in the line for the drug store. It’s unavoidable. We live in the age where Gen Z tweets about how critical they are of modern celebrities, and unless they’re standing at gun point will never be satisfied. We live in a world where people post online about how people should be putting their bodies on the line and compromising their safety for strangers. Do I think it’s horrid what’s happening? Absolutely. But would I willingly put myself in danger? Absolutely not. And celebrities should and will feel the same. Gaga has been active behind the scenes in politics for years but people here dont seem to research that enough, and even made her stance on anti-immigration clear 15 years ago and even dedicated a song to it on her album and tour. I think she will have put money behind stopping these things as best she can.4 points

Imagine Gaga sacrificing her voice to a label? Or surrending her morality to internet comment driven PR? As an excuse to not say something when literal nazis are shooting people in the back in the streets Not arguing with you, I know you agree in spirit, but if that's truly why she's staying silent then she's even further gone than I thought she was.4 points
-
i agree with elsa as long as we stay silent we are complicit and if us peons with small to no followings can say **** our leaders they are failing us so can other much more affluent, richer, humans that have much closer proximity to make sure our president elect knows no matter what corner he turns no matter how many cronies he has there will be about 2 more people telling him making sure he doesn’t feel an iota of comfort EVER4 points

They aren't complacent. They're complicit. Also, classism against the rich isn't a bad thing. Trying to argue you can be classist against the millionaires and billionaires is like trying to say the KKK could be victims of racism in southern american.4 points

Who said I’m defending Gaga? I’m explaining why silent pop girl behaviour is not unreasonable. Let me know what Gaga can do to help end ICE or Trump… Gather army of twinks to defeat them? Craft a tweet to get likes? Write a letter to congress that would just be tossed in the garbage? Be realistic.4 points
