An icon of her times for sure, but she spent the last years of her life promoting racism, homophobia and getting cozy with the French far right party. She might have been beautiful but her words and actions were plain ugly in the end. Good riddance.

One of her most hidden and defining bodies of work in her discography, I relistened to this album recently and wow! The songs are so melodic and romantic, from the first detail to the last. Each string, each instrument has a purpose. It may take longer to grasp its flow and understand the song structures and hooks, but once it clicks you realise is a cohesive, aesthethically perfect almost, and skipless (!) record. Melancholic, elegant, slowburning, full of stunning prechoruses (Terrence Loves You gives me chills). The singles, from High By the Beach to Music To Watch Boys To and were great and replayable, while the deep cuts like Honeymoon and Art Deco were mysterious and captivating in a less attention-grabbing way. The music choices, the album photoshoot, the imagery etc were immaculate and Lana exemplifying peak artistry. Do you agree? When was the last time you listened to this masterpiece?

I only found out upon her death that she expressed strong right wing and hateful views in later years. All I knew was that she turned to animal activism after giving up acting and that was it. To know that she cosied up to Marine Le Pen, was fined thousands of euros over the years for inciting racial hatred, expressed homophobia and denounced the MeToo movement was very sad to discover. That last part is particularly unfortunate, as, for someone who was held up as a figurehead of the sexual revolution, she actually thought very little of women and their rights. It's always baffling to me how a lot of women from gen x and earlier benefitted massively from feminism yet won't identify with it and even look down upon it. This is why I always say never to assume that a woman is feminist just because she's making stereotypically feminist choices. In my experience, a lot of women who choose to portray themselves sexually don't think of themselves as feminists, even though their lifestyle literally wouldn't be possible without it. I'm not someone who supports speaking ill of the dead but death doesn't mean we shouldn't criticise the choices one made in life.

I can only speak for myself; Killah has grown on me quite a bit, but the bridge is hands-down one of the most annoying things she has ever done.
